The First “Killer Robot” ever seen. Mechanical Man (1921) is an Italian science fiction film from the silent era. It is an interesting and rare film. It prominently features a robot as it's primary antagonist, or at least as a part of the primary antagonist. The robot is controlled remotely by a nefarious operator. At the end of the film she is defeated when she is separated from the remote control. While this movie may have the first killer robot on film. The debate on the first movie robot is a difficult one to put to rest. If the definition of a robot is stretched much earlier movies feature some kind of artificially intelligent machine. There are also a few lost serials and films which featured some kind of robotic creature from the 1910s, I have found a source I am investigating for these films.

Yesterday, I passed by a subway entrance in Guangzhou and experienced a retail kiosk operated by a humanoid robot again, buying a bottle of water. The process was the same: select items on a screen, scan a QR code for mobile payment, and the humanoid robot retrieves the product. (However, it didn't interact with me at all.) I looked it up, and the wheeled humanoid robot is named S1, from AutoLife Robotics in Shenzhen. It uses omnidirectional wheels for movement and a lifting body. It's 1-1.6m tall, weighs 72kg, and has a 10-hour battery life. A single arm can carry 3-5kg. Furthermore, this humanoid robot is suitable for lightweight tasks in retail, convenience stores, supermarkets, and warehouse sorting.

Nader Khalil🍊 explains all the hottest emerging AI trends in one demo: AI applications in 2026 will be multi-model, multi-modal, hybrid cloud/local, use open source models as well as proprietary models, control robots and embedded devices in the physical world, and have voice interfaces. (And the demo had a cute robot *and* a cute dog. Gold.) The demo was built with Pipecat AI. NVIDIA posted a really nice technical walk-through and complete code. The Reachy Mini robot from Hugging Face is open source hardware. (You can order it now, I have one!). You can run the assistant locally on your own hardware, in the cloud, or both.

The second built a system that 3D prints new tools for the robot to do new work on Mars. Both demonstrate why I love builders so much. Dreaming of a new world and learning together how to build for a new robot none of them have used before.
