#FlashbackFriday to when Pips first arrived at Kaluku. 12 months ago, an orphaned giraffe calf – just a couple of weeks old – was reported near our Kaluku Field Headquarters in Tsavo. She had been seen alone, quietly coming to a water trough to drink before melting back into... the thick bush, always disappearing before anyone could reach her. It was our SWT/KWS Canine Unit, out on patrol, who finally found her still on her own. A helicopter search confirmed what we feared: there were no other giraffes anywhere nearby. We later learned that her mother had been killed by lions. Catching her was a mission. She was dizzyingly quick, determined to give the team the slip, and the perfect size and colour to vanish into the bush. But, as is always the case, the team persisted – and finally managed to secure the little calf. Today, that same tiny, hard-to-catch orphan is growing up safe in our care at Kaluku, where she will eventually reclaim her place in the wild. Our young giraffe at our Kaluku Neonate Unit in Tsavo can usually be found in the middle of whatever's happening – watching over the smaller orphans, working her way through the browse, keeping a long-necked eye on the daily comings and goings. In November 2010, our SWT/KWS Ziwani Anti-Poaching Team moved in to rescue a young orphaned elephant – and a lion leapt from the undergrowth and grabbed her by the neck. A KWS ranger fired shots into the air. The lion released its grip. And Ishanga, bleeding and paralysed by fear, was loaded into a Land Rover, then flown to our Nairobi Nursery. What followed were weeks of painstaking patience. Wild-eyed and terrified, she refused to let anyone near. She grappled with nightmares long after her wounds healed. But slowly, steadily, she healed. Today, Ishanga is living back in the wild, one of the success stories of our reintegration process. And over the weekend, she walked back to her old home to introduce her brand-new daughter to the Keepers who raised her. Read her full story:

Naptime for Bumpy, with no detail spared: a soft bean bag, a cosy blanket, and a special nanny to watch him as he sleeps! Pips the giraffe loves to look after the little orphans – so naturally she was very excited to meet the small, stout hippo who just entered the fold. Bumpy is our newest rescue. After his mother died, the little orphan spent at least a day huddled by her body before the Kenya Wildlife Service found him and brought him into our care. Lemeki surprised us all, charging around from the minute she exited the rescue helicopter! Even the guineafowl couldn't escape her playful antics. This flock became her best friend and the feeling was mutual. When she changed stables, they relocated and came to roost on her roof! Her start was extraordinary: rescued as a week-old newborn in 2018 after she was spotted in the floodwaters of the Mara River. Today she is eight years old and one of the lead females of our Voi herd, edging closer to a wild life of her own. Hours after rescue, saved from a septic pit, Zuri already understood that she was finally safe. Just hours before, she'd been stuck in the depths of the dark tank, so deep rescuers had struggled to make out the tiny elephant inside. She was barely keeping her head above the water and would not have survived much longer. Hauled to safety, this was Zuri's first rest stop at our Voi Unit. The next day, she was flown to our Nairobi Nursery where she was welcomed into the trunks of her new orphan family. Now she is recovering and starting to trust her new caregivers. Adopt Zuri:

A 2 year old cow & her young calf were sold at market to 2 different farms. In the middle of the night the mother cow broke down a fence and walked 7 miles in an unfamiliar area to the farm where her calf had been sold. She was found the next morning, contently nursing her baby..

It's hard to believe Chamboi was once so small our team could easily carry him in their arms. He used to squeak constantly for reassurance and comfort, but today - he's a teenager with a strut that is full of confidence! Why was he so small? Well Chamboi was rescued as a newborn in September 2023 – found alone by rangers near a waterhole in Tsavo West at barely a day old, his mother nowhere to be found. We brought him to Kaluku, so he could grow up and reintegrate back into the same ecosystem he was rescued from. He's still on that journey, growing up among orphaned elephants, Pips the giraffe and an assortment of other orphaned animals. But as black rhinos are want to be, Chamboi keeps to his own beat. He likes long walks, unhurried mud baths, a midday sleep, and afternoon play. Nearly always in that order. Around 6,788 black rhino remain in the wild, so every animal saved (and rewilded) counts. Olare is a mother! Earlier this week, our beautiful ex-orphan returned to Ithumba and proudly introduced us to her equally beautiful baby girl, who we have named Ola. Olare was orphaned at a tender young age, but despite the heartbreak she faced, she never let her past define her. She has an enormous heart and has always been an exceptional nanny, first at the Nursery, then at our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, and later to her friends’ wild-born babies. We are thrilled that Olare now has the opportunity to raise her own baby — and we know that she will be an excellent mum. To read more about Olare’s new addition, visit:

🚨#BREAKING: A Minnesota mother, Bonnie Pierce, escaped her burning house only to realize her toddler was still inside… ...and she ran BACK into the flames. Firefighters found her wrapped around her baby girl, shielding her with her own body. ❤️ Her daughter, SURVIVED, she saved her life. Her name is Bonnie Pierce, she was 38, a mom from St. Paul, Minnesota. On Saturday afternoon, a fire broke out in the duplex where she was home with two of her daughters. One of the girls, Aurora, did something incredible to save herself. She kicked an air conditioning unit clean out of a window and climbed through it to safety. And Bonnie made it out too. She was OUT. She was safe. But her other little girl, Grace, still just a toddler, was somewhere back inside that burning building. Her mother, Bonnie, didn't think twice. She turned around and ran back into the fire. When firefighters fought their way in, they found her. She had wrapped her own body around her daughter, shielding that little girl from the flames and the smoke with everything she had left. Protecting her baby to the very end. Bonnie was found unresponsive, she'd been without oxygen for nearly 15 minutes. She had burns over 48% of her body. First responders and doctors fought for her with everything they had. But on Monday, Bonnie passed away from her injuries. Little Grace, the daughter she shielded with her own body… SURVIVED. She's still in the hospital. But doctors say she is expected to make a FULL recovery. That is a mother's love. Her home is now covered in flowers and chalk writing from friends that say "HERO" everywhere. My husband and I decided to open our hearts to a 10-and-a-half-year-old dog. We weren't looking to adopt another dog, but when we learned that she had spent three months at the shelter without a single visitor or adoption inquiry, we couldn't bear the thought of her growing old and passing away alone. Although she wasn't with a rescue organization, her story was shared widely throughout the animal rescue community. She was incredibly gentle and sweet, and the shelter volunteers adored her. They loved her so much that they often let her spend time with them in the office instead of leaving her alone in her kennel. The day after we heard about her, we went to meet her. The moment we saw her, we knew we couldn't walk away. When we brought her home, she was covered in ticks. Helping her recover wasn't easy. We made countless trips to the veterinarian, patiently tried different treatments, and devoted a great deal of time to her care. There were moments when it felt overwhelming, but we never regretted our decision. All we wanted was for her to spend the rest of her life surrounded by love. In the end, we received the greatest gift of all. She stayed with us for three more wonderful years before peacefully passing away at 13 and a half years old, an impressive age for a dog. She brought so much joy into our family and will always hold a special place in our hearts. Incredibly vulnerable to the elements, we would place a cosy blanket on her back when she left her stable each morning to keep her warm and ward off the chill. Today, stronger and chubbier, she has no need for a blanket – although she still spends her nights resting her head on a soft bed of hay. Meet Kaikai:

With time running out, and a green light from the authorities to mount a rescue, we stepped in. Cassie testified today that the assault by Diddy that was caught on security camera, happened because she tried to leave a Freak Off before it was over. Diddy hit her and she ran out as fast as she could, before he caught up to her in the hallway, viciously assaulted her and dragged her back to finish.
