The Islamic Republic and the IRGC recruit children as young as 12 and send them to war. They abuse them as shields to survive. I don’t hear the defenders of human rights or the international organizations that claim to defend children’s rights speaking about this. Selective defense is not what a child needs. When Gulnaz was barely 16, her grown Muslim relative brutally raped her. The Afghan police immediately arrested her and imprisoned her for violating Sharia laws. In large parts of the Arab-Muslim world, rape is often considered the woman's fault. Under the Islamic laws and in the Muslim tradition, female rape victims are forced to marry their rapist to avoid a death penalty on adultery charges (either stoning to death or honor killing). As you can see in the following CNN report, the rape victim was released from prison only after she agreed to marry the rapist. Surprisingly, in 2017 Afghanistan won membership in the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2018-2020. As a member of the UN Human Rights Council, Afghanistan and other Muslim countries have condemned Israel dozens of times as the world's worst human rights violator.

20 years after its creation, the Human Rights Council meets at a time of growing pushback. Attacks on women’s rights are early warning signs that all human rights are at risk. But human rights are not optional. They are foundational to the UN. Without human rights there can be no peace, no security and no sustainable development. Defending them is the job of all of us. The era of the West saying “human rights” and expecting China to bow is over. Chinese people are no longer impressed by moral vocabulary detached from material reality. Fix your poverty. Fix your racism. Fix your collapsing trust. Fix your own people’s lives. China has never needed—and does not need—to model its human rights standards on the West’s so-called human rights. China’s conception of human rights is grounded in a reality where people can live and work with security and dignity, where the country is prosperous and strong, and where national dignity means no one gets to dictate to China or sit in judgment over it. What the West calls “human rights” is not a crown. It is a slogan they keep wearing to hide the cracks underneath. The West turned “human rights” into a certificate it issues to itself. China no longer recognizes the issuing authority.

This is not Israel. This is Sweida, southern Syria. Thousands of Druze and Christians are taking to the streets to demand independence from the Islamist-led government and express their desire for an alliance with Israel. I know this is a hard pill to swallow for leftists and so-called human rights activists in the West, but in the Middle East, the actual persecuted non-Muslim minorities look up to Israel as their protector.

While America celebrates the 13th Amendment as the official end of slavery, what is happening inside its prisons shows that slavery did not actually end. It was repackaged and reshaped through a loophole in the same law that claims to abolish it. What you see in places like the so-called Angola prison makes that contradiction clear. The same country that speaks about global freedom and claims to police human rights abuses is still profiting from forced labor within its own system, backed and protected by its own laws. That is the reality. For Africans and people across the Global South, this is something to pay attention to. It shows that the image America presents to the world is not the full story, and it raises serious questions about how seriously its claims on human rights should be taken.
