The UN is the biggest waste of money that needs to be reallocated to an organization that will stand for the protection of all women and the condemnation of all domestic violence - for the right reasons.

When Gulnaz was barely 16, her grown Muslim relative brutally raped her. The Afghan police immediately arrested her and imprisoned her for violating Sharia laws. In large parts of the Arab-Muslim world, rape is often considered the woman's fault. Under the Islamic laws and in the Muslim tradition, female rape victims are forced to marry their rapist to avoid a death penalty on adultery charges (either stoning to death or honor killing). The United Nations must defend women’s rights unconditionally, not within a framework dictated by the Taliban. Yet citizens of Western democracies still view the UN as a highly trusted institution. That's the paradox: nations accused of violating rights are the ones charged with setting global human rights standards. To discuss this, Hillel Neuer joins Inside Policy Talks. Neuer is a lawyer, writer, and activist, and the executive director of UN Watch, a human rights NGO based in Geneva, Switzerland. On the podcast, he tells Casey Babb, director of MLI’s Promised Land project, that public opinion surveys continuing showing widespread public confidence in the UN amongst those living in Western democracies. “What’s said at the UN influences the hearts and minds of hundreds of millions of people,” says Neuer. And that means what happens at the UN matters “whether we like it or not.” That’s why he’s focused on turning a mirror on some of the UN's worst human rights abusers, while highlighting the hypocrisy of the body's treatment of Israel: It “turns a blind eye to human rights abuses happening in China,” he notes, while making Israel a “scapegoat for everything they're not doing on catastrophes around the world.” He says Canada and its Western allies must use their “moral gravitas” to challenge this moral imbalance at the UN. With all due respect to the hundreds of millions of decent Muslims, they must acknowledge that there are millions of Muslim men who, as a result of how Islam portrays infidels, their dehumanization and the objectification of their women, come to see non-Muslim women as whores to be used, regardless of age. I was a Muslim, and I grew up under that system. I was taught that non-Muslims are pimps because they allow their women to go out in public uncovered; that they don’t mind “sharing” their women; that their women enjoy being whores; that they are not like Muslim women. Yes, this view is rampant in the Islamic world, and I don’t care what some Muslims say, if they deny this, they are lying. How can this reality be changed? There is no way to end this mentality without exposing the sacred heritage of Islam. This is not the result of a fringe interpretation; it is the outcome of sanctifying the life of Muhammad and his companions.
