Did you know the original The Legend of Zelda was first released on the Famicom Disk System, not NES? Because it came on a floppy disk format, it allowed players to SAVE their progress — a groundbreaking feature at the time. Later on, it was re-released in NES and Famicom cartridge form, and that’s probably the version most gamers experienced first. The floppy disk version of Zelda is originally yellow, but I swapped the shell using a gold cartridge from another game and made myself a golden Zelda floppy disk. Pretty cool, right?

This one definitely qualifies for the often-cited "Kids today will never know"… The original release of Windows 95 famously came on 28 (!) floppy disks. Because the operating system required roughly 40 MB (nothing now, but pretty big back then) of space, and each standard 3.5" floppy disk only held 1.44 MB of data, the massive set was Microsoft's way of supporting older computers that lacked CD-ROM drives, which were still quite expensive at the time. Installing Windows 95 required hours of manually swapping disks, and a single corrupted disk could ruin the entire process - the horror! Downloading and installing 40 MB today would take just a few seconds. Back then, it took half an afternoon (or longer if you hit that dreaded corrupted disk).

Back in the late 1980s, a friend gave me a single floppy disk as a birthday present. He told me it was something you could put games on and actually play, and I remember staring at it all day, wondering if something that magical could really be possible. I followed him to a computer academy, and that was the first time I had ever seen a computer in my life. As a reward for bringing me in, he even got a whole box of floppy disks. That was the moment I first stepped into a completely new world. And when I saw, just like in the video, games being copied onto a disk, inserted into a computer, and actually running… the shock I felt easily ranks in my top five moments of my life.

Reminder that GRADIUS has a nice #CommodoreAmiga port named TINYUS (by Abyss, 2021). Runs on Amiga 500 1MB on a single floppy disk and seems to use reverse engineering of the original code for accuracy. More info: #AmigaReposts #gamedev #STG #グラディウス
