I had the privilege of witnessing this on a trip to Botswana several years ago. There was a herd of elephants who caught wind of our Land Cruiser and took off toward the tree line. They thundered over and promptly disappeared as soon as the last elephant reached cover. Amazing!

At all our reintegration units the focus is on supporting the orphans as they transition back to the wild. For the female elephants this leads on to starting a family of their own. To date, we know of 77 calves born to elephants we’ve rescued and raised: their wild-living mothers choosing return, so that we might share in their joy. Our Umani herd is heading home for the night, with Mwana, Kerrio and Kapei politely jostling for first position! Many of the elephants in this line no longer sleep in the stockades. But the Umani herd is a true unit, choosing to travel together. Those who now spend their nights in the forest lead their stockade-dependent friends home, see them safely inside, then head off to spend the night in the bush. Come morning, they’ll gather outside the stockades and set off together once again. None of these elephants are related by birth. Each is an orphan raised through our Orphans’ Project or, like Mwana, the wild-born offspring of one. Yet they are bound by the same deep bonds as any elephant family. After an orange truck broke down in South Africa, a family of wild elephants strolled up and decided to help themselves to some oranges. Elephants have the strongest sense of smell in the animal kingdom and can detect water from over 10 miles away, so it's likely they smelled these oranges and chose to make their way over. Elephants also communicate with each other through their feet from miles away, so the elephants you see toward the end could actually be from another family who were informed of the bounty.

He visited last month among a cohort of more than twenty ex-orphans who had padded in from the bush. Sometimes he rocked up with the herd. Other times, he came alone. And sometimes, our Casanova was on a mission: to woo Suswa! The two elephants spent two or three days together, so we look forward to seeing whether the pitter-patter of tiny feet comes from that sojourn. Although everyone gives him the respect he is due, Laikipia is very tolerant of the dependent orphans. When he arrived for breakfast after his honeymoon, he scooped up range cubes next to Kenderi at the feeding trough and then drank from the water trough next to Lemeki. It’s a sign of the times: When food and water are plentiful, elephants can aggregate in great numbers without putting too much stress on the landscape. This ecosystem is home to Kenya’s biggest population of elephants. Spanning 50,000 square kilometres, it is prime elephant country. The baby elephants stretched out on the ground for a nap, while the adults slept standing, as elephants naturally do. As a result, the vehicle was “stuck” in the middle of the herd for over an hour. The herd slept peacefully and trustingly right beside the vehicle, creating a scene that was both adorable and a super rare “elephant traffic jam.” 💖✨
