For an upcoming project at Active Theory I've been experimenting with a file format i'm calling ActiveFrame. Like a video format, leveraging H.264 compression, allows random-access to any frame and it's fully hardware accelerated. No runtime depedencies, works eveywhere.

Wow! Send A File By Just The Camera! A vibe coder used AI to build a file transfer system that sends data between two phones using only a screen and a camera. One phone displays a new type of animated QR codes while the other scans them to rebuild the file, with no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cables needed. It is fully optical and local. 6 months at Rise! 6 months of me getting to do what I love, with a team full of superstars. Over the last few months, I've been tweaking and experimenting with some poster styles for Hisa (formerly Chaka) Invest with Hisa, and I really love where I'm headed. Caught up with Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo, who are promoting Bounty at the Super Bowl. Had to ask Skattebo for an update on his ankle, even though he's getting tired of the questions. Here's the latest: "I'm starting to run again and people are telling me to be careful and do this and do that. It's like, 'I'm good.' I'm not going to put myself in a bad spot, but I'm working to get better. I'm probably about two months out of being fully healthy. Getting there, but having a good time while doing it." They're even a duo as pitchmen. More to come in a story later/tomorrow.

I've been testing out Windows 11's new Haptic Signals feature on compatible hardware, and I think I love it. I'm someone who yearns for small UX details like this, and I'm so happy to see Microsoft leaning into subtle but quality UX implementations like haptics across the Windows Shell. These new Haptic Signals provide a subtle bump when interacting with certain UI elements and actions, such as snapping app windows or dragging files in File Explorer. The feedback response feels great and intentional, and makes using the OS feel more satisfying. There's still room for improvement, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed with this first implementation. It's only supported on a handful of devices for now, but that should change over time. I've always loved the haptic feedback layered throughout Google Pixel phones, and now Windows is getting its own version of it. More UX niceties like this, please!

the so101 + leslider frame i've been playing with the past few weeks wasn't just a random rig i built for fun it's what we at LiveKit built to benchmark and debug our infra (s/o livekit-portal), and today we're open-sourcing it so everyone can reproduce and share coolio results at home here is the github: i know this isn’t the first frame designed for evals, but it’s ours, and it’s open, and it’s with a LeSlider! along with this, we’ve released simulations files (URDF, MJCF, and USD), as well as a sample RL env in MJLab for pick-and-place tasks we want people to have fun, being close to the frontier as much as possible, and we want people to know it shouldn’t take thousands of dollars in equipment to reproduce some of the most amazing results the academic world has to offer personally, I’m going to deploy sim2real and real2sim2real pipelines on this soon, for fun, so look out for that.

Bad news: my computer is dying and I need help to replace it so I can keep creating the content you love. The thermal interface is failing, which is causing overheating and throttling in the form of random freezes and crashes that are making it increasingly difficult to do basic tasks, let alone things like video editing (see video). I was hoping to replace the computer in a few months, but the problem is so bad now it's impacting my ability to make a living. Because I've been deplatformed from other financial apps, I've set up a GiveSendGo (link in reply) with a longer explanation. If you'd like to send crypto, DM for my addresses.
