Iranian state media has confirmed the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86. He was killed yesterday by US and Israeli airstrikes; murdered while in the middle of negotiations with the United States about Iran’s nuclear program. Iran has always insisted its nuclear program is for peaceful, civilian purposes. Israel remains the only country in the Middle East with nuclear weapons – despite never acknowledging its arsenal or being a signatory to the NPT (non-proliferation treaty).

Speaking last night to Fox News, Secretary of State and now National Security Advisor Marco Rubio stated that in a deal with the United States, Iran will be allowed to maintain its nuclear energy program, but that it must agree to halt the enrichment of uranium, only importing enriched uranium needed for its reactors. He then claims that the only countries in the world who enrich uranium are those that have nuclear weapons, but this is just not true, as countries like Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands all operate uranium enrichment facilities without having an active nuclear weapons program.
