For decades, climate models assumed that bare ice, the exposed surface left behind when seasonal snow melts, was impermeable. Every drop of summer melt was thought to run straight into the ocean. But new research shows bare ice can actually absorb, retain, and even refreeze meltwater. Field data show... current models exaggerating Greenland runoff by between 21 to 58% during peak melt, with runoff-driven mass loss overstated by as much as 47%, and surface melt by up to 40%. In southwest Greenland alone, between 11 and 17 gigatons of meltwater are held back each year within bare ice. That's nearly 15% of what models assumed was pouring into the sea. And because more than three quarters of Greenland's melt comes from these bare ice zones, the errors here are huge. Greenland has been the poster child of global warming for decades.
