Anybody can get a pump. I can get one in my living room in four minutes with no equipment whatsoever. Twenty press-ups. A band I found in a drawer. Fifty bodyweight squats. Waving my arms about for ninety seconds. A set of thirty on anything, nowhere near failure, rested short enough to keep the blood where I put it. None of that is hard. None of that is a decision. The pump arrives whether you meant it or not, which is precisely why it cannot be evidence of anything. And it lives in the eight to twelve range, because that is where the weight is never frightening. You can chase a sensation all afternoon in there. Nothing you pick up is ever going to look back at you. Now go and get under something that might beat you. There is no hiding on a heavy set of five. You cannot half-do it. You cannot drift through it thinking about your afternoon. The weight either moves or it sits there in front of everybody. That is why eight to twelve has survived fifty years of scrutiny it never earned. It is the widest band of weight you can lift while remaining completely unaccountable. Heavy enough to feel like effort. Light enough that nothing is ever on the line. A rep range you can occupy for a decade without once finding out what you are capable of, and leave every session swollen, sweating and entirely convinced. Heavy training keeps a record. That is the objection to it, and nobody will ever say so out loud. Take a set of five to within a rep of failure and you will find out exactly what you are worth, in kilos, before you leave the building. Most people would rather not.

And you have to understand that the way to get rich is not to spend it, to save it and let it grow. This is the key to success. I've been saying it for decades. You save twenty percent of your income in perpetuity, put it into the market, and you leave it alone. You start doing it in your late twenties, even if you just got the average salary, by the time you're sixty-five, you have one and a half to two million bucks. Stock market does that. You do it. But the reason most people can't is they don't have the discipline to save. They buy too much stuff they don't need.

Two summers ago, Kara Lawson was speaking to her Duke basketball team. She wanted them to shift their mindset. What followed was 2+ minutes of gold on how to be successful. Here’s Lawson on embracing hard things: “We all wait in life for things to get easier. Think in your own life. I just gotta get through this, and then it'll be easy … It's what we do. We wait for stuff to get easier. “It will never get easier. What happens is you handle hard better. “Most people think life is gonna get easier. Basketball is gonna get easier. School is gonna get easier. It never gets easier. What happens is you become someone that handles hard stuff better. “That's a mental shift that has to occur and each of your brains. If you go around waiting for stuff to get easier in life, it's never going to happen. And then what happens? Oh, it's so hard. Oh, I can't do it. When is it going to be easy for me? Oh, it's easy for other people. “It's not. It's hard. And the second we see you handling hard better, what are we gonna do? We're gonna make it harder. Because we're preparing you for when you leave here. Not just basketball – in life. “And if you think life when you leave college is going to all of a sudden get easy because you graduated and you got a degree, it's not going to get easier. It's going to get harder. “Make yourself a person that handles hard well, not someone that's waiting for the easy. Because if you have a meaningful pursuit in life, it will never be easy. If you're trying to win a championship, if you're trying to have a family … Ask your parents. Do you think it was ever easy for them? “If you want to be successful, it goes to the people that handle hard well. Those are the people that get the stuff they want … If it's hard, don't get discouraged. It's supposed to be. Don't wait for it to be [easy]. It won't. "Make yourself someone that handles hard well, and then whatever comes, you're going to be great.” – My takeaways: 1. This isn’t about sports. It’s about building a business, building a family, building a community, being a valuable citizen and every other meaningful thing in life. 2. “Hard” doesn’t mean “bad.” There can be joy in hard things. 3. There’s a Haitian proverb: “Behind mountains are more mountains.” There’s always another one to climb. 4. What you see on social media is a facade. People make their lives look glamorous online. Behind the screen is a human being struggling through their journey. 5. None of us are immune to difficulty (even if some try to appear that way). 6. “Easy” is convenient, “hard” is fulfilling. What satisfies you in the short-term robs you in the long run. 7. Have you ever heard someone tell a story about how easy a great achievement was? 8. “Easy choices hard life, hard choices easy life” misses the point. We shouldn’t seek an easy life to begin with. 9. Instead, build your capacity for difficult things. Then find joy in the process of handling those things. 10. No meaningful life travels an easy road. ||| Hope this is helpful. Jordan Peterson: "If you can't fix your room, you can't fix your life" "Why should you even bother improving yourself? The answer is something like: so you don't suffer anymore stupidly than you have to. And maybe so others don't have to either. It's not some casual self-help doctrine. If you don't organize yourself properly, you'll pay for it. In a big way. And so will the people around you." Peterson continues: "You can say, 'Well, I don't care about that.' But that's actually not true, you do care about it. Because if you're in pain, you will care about it. It's very rare that you can find someone in excruciating pain who would say, 'Well, it would be no better if I was out of this.' Pain brings the idea that it would be better if it didn't exist along with it. It's incontrovertible." On how to start: "Look around for something that bothers you and see if you can fix it. You can do this in a room. Sit in your bedroom and think: 'If I wanted to spend ten minutes making this room better, what would I have to do?' You have to ask yourself that, it's a genuine question. And things will pop out. There's a stack of papers bugging you. Some rubbish behind your computer monitor you haven't attended to for six months. Cables tangled up." He explains why this matters: "If you were coming to see me for psychotherapy, the easiest thing would be to get you to organize your room. You think, is that psychotherapy? It depends on how you conceive the limits of your being. Start where you can start. If something announces itself as in need of repair that you could repair, fix it. Fix a hundred things like that, your life will be a lot different." On fixing what you repeat every day: "People tend to think of their daily routines as trivial. You get up, brush your teeth, have breakfast. Those probably constitute 50% of your life. People think, they're mundane, I don't need to pay attention to them. No, that's exactly wrong. The things you do every day are the most important things you do. Hands down. Just do the arithmetic." On staying within your competence: "Sometimes you don't know how to fix something. Imagine you're walking down the street and there's a guy who's alcoholic and schizophrenic and has been homeless for ten years. That's a problem. It would be good if you could fix it, but you haven't got a clue. You walk around that and go find something you could fix. Just because something announces itself as in need of repair doesn't mean it's you, right then and there, who should repair it. You have to have some humility. You don't walk up to a helicopter that isn't working and just start tinkering away." Peterson shares the key insight: "As soon as you give your mind a genuine aim, it'll reconfigure the world in keeping with that aim. That's actually how you see to begin with. You've all seen the video where you watch basketballs being tossed back and forth, and while you're doing that, a gorilla walks into the middle of the video and you don't see it. If you thought about that experiment for five years, that would be about the right amount of time to spend thinking about it." He explains what it reveals: "What it shows you is that you see what you aim at. If you can get one thing through your head, that would be a good one. You see what you aim at. One inference you might draw from that is: be careful what you aim at. What you aim at determines the way the world manifests itself to you. So if the world is manifesting itself in a very negative way, one thing to ask is: are you aiming at the right thing?"

Being Dominant means being the One in Control. Some people love it and some hate it, but either way, there is always someone in control and the areas where you are not the one in control, are where you have given that control to someone else! Being the one in control means being the one people TRUST to lead, to be in charge. And for us to hold that responsibility, we gotta be not only comfortable with that role, but to love it! To want it. Control holds negative connotations, yet if it is exerted by someone with positive intentions, it is very healthy. It means you trust yourself and don't need to rely on others to direct you. NOT being in control means chaos. It means helplessness. It means inability to make decisions. Or to take initiatives. It means you are the one that follows. And if that is what you actually desire you have to be conscious of that choice. Otherwise you fall into that role and then wonder why nothing goes as you want. And if you choose to follow, choose your leader wisely. There always is someone in control, someone in charge, someone that leads. There is always a power dynamic. Truth is, we feel safe with those in control. Especially when they show us that them being in that role is positive for us. But so many people trust others more than they trust themselves! Which means being constantly influenced by everyone else's option and advice... which makes then the ones in control of your life! Decide WHO you want to take control when you want or need it, but also choose when YOU should be The One in charge. Developing that self-trust requires radical self responsibility. Which is what people struggle with. Nobody wants to be responsible for anything. And then we blame everyone for why our lives are not what we want them to be. And if you DO want to dominate, start by controling your own Self, your own thoughts, your own life. You can't expect others to trust YOU if YOU don't. Think about it... those that are in control are the people that have the most influence in the world. So if conscious people who desire to create a positive change take more control/responsibility, it would literally change society as we know it.

They see us once the game is going the popcorn's been popped and the lights are brighter. It takes so much more like sacrifice and discipline and things over the course if you want to be really great at this and if you want to do it for a long period of time. It's so many hours that you got to commit to it. There's so many things that you maybe want to do that you can't if you want to be great but everybody's journey is different.
