The Matrix came out 25 years ago this week. It has one of the great sci-fi opening scenes ever with a strange noir world, Bullet Time action and an absolute chad villain (Agent Smith). That opener also has a great business backstory: the Wachowski siblings initially asked Warner Bros for $180m, which was a wild sum for unproven directors. The studio ultimately agreed to $63m. To meet the lower budget, production moved to Australia in 1998 (it came out in 1999). The Wachowskis spent over 4 months of pre-production for the actors — Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity), Keanu Reeves (Neo), Lawrence Fishburne (Morpheus), Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith) — to train in martial arts and gun-fighting. Warner Bro became concerned with the pace of production. They hadn’t seen much footage and didn’t have much visibility into the budget. To assuage studio execs, the sibling directors had to send over some film. Turns out they had already spent $5m+ on the opener (which was filmed over 4 days). So, they cut footage into a ~5-minute intro and added special FX. Let’s just say the studio was very satisfied with the result and left them alone afterwards. Reflecting on watching The Matrix for the first time, James Cameron said it was “one of the most profoundly fresh science fiction films ever made.” That tone is set right from the legendary opening.

This scene in Andrei Tarkovsky's "The Sacrifice" (1986) was shot twice. In the first take, when the house started to burn, the film in the camera jammed & couldn't be reloaded in time to capture everything. The producers and some of the crew members wanted Tarkovsky to use edited footage to complete the film. Tarkovsky, who had never compromised for his art, persuaded them that a retake was necessary, since he believed that this scene was the soul and essence of the movie. For the retake, the house was reconstructed within 2 weeks & it was set on fire again. This time everything went according to plan. The censors objected to this kissing (sex) scene in 'The Big Combo' (1955) stating that “This filth of showing a guy going down on a woman is not for the American audience.” Joseph H Lewis hit back at them saying that the scene was open left to interpretation and they were the one filthy for imagining that. After that, the Censors allowed that scene to appear in the movie. Here is Joseph H. Lewis explaining the incident: "They called me into the projection room and I asked them what they objected to, and one guy very crudely came out and said, “This filth of showing a guy going down on a woman is not for the American audience.” And I said, “You’re the one that’s filthy. California Governor Gavin Newsom is refusing to release data on how much it’s costing taxpayers to pay for security for Kamala Harris so she can travel and do her “book tour” Dozens of California Highway Patrol officers have been assigned to Kamala Harris' book tour since August “We submitted two California Public Records Act requests. The chase scene in William Friedkin's THE FRENCH CONNECTION [1971] was shot mostly without permission and was extremely dangerous. I kept the whole scene intact for you, I didn't dare cut it short. William Friedkin shot most of the chase without full permits from the city. He did have permission for PARTS of it, but a lot of what you see is Bill Hickman actually running Gene Hackman's Pontiac LeMans through real Brooklyn streets with real traffic and pedestrians who had no idea a movie was being shot. They had off-duty cops helping block intersections, but plenty of the near-misses with actual civilian cars and pedestrians are real, not staged extras. Friedkin has said in interviews he just had a camera mounted low on the car and told Hickman to go. There's a famous moment where a woman with a baby carriage crosses in front of the car. That was a random bystander, not planned, and they kept it in the film. Also, they hit an actual car by accident during filming and used the footage anyway. Friedkin has openly admitted over the years he'd never get away with it today and that it was reckless.

I’m glad I saw it to the end and I will watch the reunion but this ending proves to me once and for all they really made art with Vanderpump Rules. The final crumbling of the fourth wall when they all directly address the producers and the audience is incredible. They highlight what’s at stake, they discuss the different ways they behave on and off camera, it’s fascinating. Finding out they were all in on the game the whole time is mind blowing. They knew what they were doing, they understood this as a collective creative process, and they made something that speaks to the intricacies of American culture so well. What a run Vanderpump kids. #vpr
