For their 15th anniversary in 1981, Grateful Dead released 'Reckoning,' a live album capturing the band at their acoustic peak. It’s only fitting that, in his selections for Vol. 1 of A Beginner’s Guide to the Grateful Dead Live, David Lemieux included the album’s “Bird Song.”

During the show at Buckeye Lake on this day in 1991, the Dead decided to whip out a little ditty called “Reuben and Cherise” according to David Lemieux, "this was the fourth and final live Grateful Dead performance of this classic Garcia/Hunter song from the Jerry Garcia Band's 'Cats Under The Stars' album, all four of which were played in 1991." “This Viola Lee Blues is going to take you places” Originally written by Noah Lewis and recorded by Cannon’s Jug Stompers in 1928, “Viola Lee Blues” became an early staple in the Grateful Dead’s repertoire between 1966 and 1970. Powerfully primal, the version featured on ‘Dick’s Picks Vol. 8’ lands in the No. 2 spot in the top five of David Lemieux’s live Dead recommendations. "This is a rare near-contemporary hit the Grateful Dead covered, joining ‘Hey Jude’ from 1969 and ‘Werewolves Of London’ in 1978. Robbie Robertson wrote the song and included it on his 1987 solo debut album. In 1991, Pop superstar Rod Stewart covered the song, and less than two years after its release, the Grateful Dead started covering it, sung by Phil Lesh. A very welcome addition to the setlist." - David Lemieux After the Dead first introduced Robertson’s ‘Broken Arrow’ to their repertoire in February ‘93, they kept it in rotation, playing it another 34 times, including this performance in June of the same year at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, NY.
