Every beatnik, every hippie, every coffeehouse hangout person from all over the state was there, all freshly psychedelicized.” - Jerry Garcia The counterculture movement in San Francisco took off at Longshoreman’s Hall during the Trips Festival, held from January 21–23, 1966. Organized by Stewart Brand, Ramon Sender, Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, and Bill Graham, the event drew over 10,000 attendees to enjoy music, art, dance, light shows, and more. With performances by the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, along with acts and workshops from the San Francisco Mime Troupe, the Open Theater, the Dancer’s Workshop, and the San Francisco Tape Music Center, this event became a significant moment in the rise of the Haight-Ashbury scene. The Grateful Dead played their historic In Concert Against AIDS benefit on May 27th, 1989, alongside Tracy Chapman, Tower of Power, Los Lobos, Joe Satriani, and John Fogerty. The benefit would raise funds to support Northern California AIDS agencies, raising awareness and combatting the stigmas against the disease. The energy of the Bay Area coming together to support the cause led to on stage collaborations with Bobby and Jerry joining John Fogerty on guitar and vocals, as well as Randy Jackson on bass, and Steve Jordan on drums.
