For years, Cuba has been covertly supplying troops/intelligence to protect the Venezuelan regime—and control the population—in exchange for oil, says journalist Gelet Martínez Fragela. “They had to acknowledge this on Sunday—the Cuban regime—that they lost 32 soldiers [in Venezuela].”

Senator Lindsey Graham, in turn, said that the fall of Maduro’s regime could lead to the collapse of the dictatorship in Cuba as well: “The communist dictatorship in Cuba has no chance of survival. It’s only a matter of time.” For years, Cuba has relied on Venezuelan oil. Cheap supplies were a matter of economic survival for Havana. Cuban intelligence services operated in Venezuela as if it were their home turf: they worked closely with law enforcement, security services, and the political apparatus. In practice, Cuban advisers were embedded in key Venezuelan ministries and agencies. For the opposition, their presence has always meant a loss of sovereignty. The slogan “Cubans out!” was heard at almost every anti-government protest. There was also resentment within the military. Mid- and lower-ranking officers viewed the Cuban “overseers” as a humiliation for the national armed forces.
