This is all getting ridiculous now — 11 YEARS to build a simple bridge👇 You’ll have probably seen the bizarre concept art for the new pedestrian bridge between Steeton and Silsden. The deliberate over-complication of this project has frankly been stunning. ➡️ Let's remind ourselves it has now been 9 YEARS since £700,000 was given by our Conservative Government to local Labour-run authorities for a feasibility study. ➡️ It then took Labour 4 years to produce a report which concluded: ‘We need a bridge’. ➡️ Funds were then allocated for this project in 2021 by the previous Conservative government. ➡️ Yet local authorities have sat on their hands and allowed the cost of this project to spiral from £3 million to £13 million. And that’s just for the bridge itself, with the total cost of the scheme when you include plans for pedestrian and cycle paths and more road crossings totalling £24 million ➡️ They are now saying the bridge will not be completed until 2027 - 11 YEARS since money was first given!! 🤔 For reference, the Prince of Wales Bridge — the Second longest bridge in the UK — took just 6 and a half years to plan and build. It is high time for both Bradford Council and the West Yorkshire Mayor to stop dithering and delaying, and to crack on and get our much Silsden to Steeton bridge built. All we want is a simple bridge. It shouldn’t be this difficult.

The hardest of decisions has been made. Tomorrow afternoon, our vet, who has been with us every step of this journey, will come to our home and help Ralph cross. Despite eating copious amounts of food, he lost 500kg in 3 weeks, down from 3kg to 2.5kg. His temperature is too low as he is too weak to regulate his body and he is showing signs of muscle weakness. Although no indicator for pain (we checked, twice), he is literally withering away and prolonging this will be completely and utterly for us, not for him and you all know by now, we would never, ever do that to our kids. He is home, on top of our warm bed and he will be so spoiled the next 24 hours. He will be hugged so much and will be told we love him until the moment he slips away in our arms Simon and I are devastated this is happening a 3rd time this year and this has been my fear for many, many years. Thank you all for being there for us and keep Ralph in your thoughts tomorrow as he starts his journey over the rainbow bridge.

Parents are being warned not to let their children play in Mill Beck in Windermere. Following regular testing undertaken by Windermere Town Council, results have once again demonstrated sewage contamination entering the small beck that runs through Windermere village. For more than a decade, the Environment Agency has known about this sewage pollution. It has even narrowed the source down to a small number of locations along the beck, yet they have still failed to bring the problem to an end. The pollution has been attributed to misconnections, but no action has been taken to ensure the issue is resolved. United Utilities states on its website that, once an issue like this is reported, its operational teams will investigate the problem, write to local residents explaining how they will resolve the pollution and protect the local environment, and trace the source back to the property where the wastewater pipes are misconnected using techniques such as dye tracing and closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveys. If a misconnection is identified, the company says it will provide advice on the corrective work needed to fix the issue. So why haven’t the Environment Agency and United Utilities carried out this work and brought an end to a problem they have known about for more than ten years? Yes, it is ultimately the responsibility of the property owner to rectify a misconnection. But it is the responsibility of the Environment Agency to regulate pollution and of United Utilities to investigate and help identify the source. Neither should be acting as though this pollution is not happening in a river that is home to rare and protected species. This has been a known source of sewage pollution for more than a decade. There is no justification for allowing it to continue unresolved.
