Force Majeure (2014) nails it with ruthless precision. One instinctive act in a split second, and an entire family dynamic quietly collapses. Östlund turns that moment into dissection of masculinity and cowardice, and never lets the characters escape it.

I think it was this moment as she held onto both kids that she realized she married the wrong one

In Election (1999), Matthew Broderick casually tossing 2 ballots in the trash feels like nothing in the moment, and then the movie slowly tightens the noose around him. It’s one of the funniest examples of how a tiny impulse can wreck everything.

Same energy

Masculinity? No. Terminal modernity.

Manchester By the Sea (2016)

Why am I supposed to hate dad when mom is sitting there like a moron too?

Hugh Jackman realizing the journalist interviewing him was once his student is the most wholesome plot twist.

I’ve seen this clip recycled countless times by accounts that claim it was real. Depressing.

If that was my former family, my ex would’ve bitched at me the ENTIRE TIME while I grabbed her and the kids and bugged out at first sign of avalanche: “Are you afraid of a little snow? I never got to see an avalanche! The kids are missing seeing the avalanche! Nothing would’ve happened! Don’t you ever shove me and the kids like that! A real man isn’t afraid of a little snow!” When we were finally safe, and part the ski chalet was crushed. I’d look at her, she’d glare back, and not talk to me for days while she seethed cuz I was right. Entire family dynamic collapses…

idk seems to me that everyone has to wait until the last minute to assess that they better GTFO. Probably the same happens for tsunamis. You see the water recede and you're like 'nah we'll be fine,' then when the wave is like 100M out you start high tailing it. Makes no sense

My instinctive act would've been to run as soon as I saw it

Reminds me of this situation.

What kind of Dad leaves his boy behind like hat?!?!

They look like the classic do-gooder communists with the invasion by the Muslims... don't worry, everything is fine and we're safe...

I saw this movie when I had young kids. The husband showed a side of his character that had not been tested before - and he failed.

Downhill stole this exact idea.

Don’t see the problem, if his wife and kids die - he can always get another wife and have more kids but if he dies it’s over. In fact he would probably get a younger wife and with his experience of being a parent he could well be a better dad next time round.

My favorite line from the movie: “I’m a victim of my own instincts.” Haha. Brilliant.

Im confused becuase this is genuinely trash 🚮🗑️

Force Majeure” is a masterclass in how a single, split-second choice can ripple through an entire family. Östlund’s lens dissects masculinity, fear, and the quiet consequences of cowardice with relentless precision every character is trapped by that one moment.

That father needs to lose his man card for at least 15 years.

Except literally no father would do that

video indicated an ignorant jerk with arrogant and narcissistic personality.

Couldn’t be me. In 2016 I walked through a flood to get to my family. We got out together

Will Ferrell did it too

Took 3 business days to evaluate another 2 to evacuate.

Like the opening of 28 Weeks Later

Movies want you to hate dads so much

Reminds me of this

AI

Did the Dad just leave his kids and wife behind?
