Why is the US gallon smaller than the imperial one? Why does the US use 2000lbs for a ton? The imperial ton is 20cwt or 2240lbs. Questions that keep me awake at night.

I remember in the 1970s when a real push was made to convert us to the metric system. We would not bend.
