Haha I never knew the story behind it but I typically have both in my fridge at all times because European butter comes in the Western shape.

I discovered this when I bought a butter dish and this squat, nearly square dish arrived. It works for kerrygold butter from Aldi, but not normal butter sticks.

Neither east nor west here, and we have both. Always assumed that the 'western stubby' was just 'bespoke' brands differentiating themselves from store brand. Kerrigold and Tillamook are stubby and generics/store brands/local dairies are long stick.
