I feel like this is the dumbest question, but are collisions with ground platforms just handled with the 3D physics in the scene (restricted to the spline) or are you doing something fancy with mapping 2D collisions to 3D somehow? Curved 2.5D has fascinated me since Kirby 64...

3d physics are used for the collisions, objects on the path use points on the curves to calculate their horizontal movement vectors. mapping 2d to 3d is a viable approach, but presents challenges related to collisions, e.g. near the forks of the path or with objects in 3d space

i move the character left and right, but what's left and right is defined by the path the character is on. think klonoa or pandemonium on ps1
