free-list-based pools have an weird property people don't talk about - at some point the slot allocation pattern becomes almost random. But there are alternative approaches, which don't use free lists at all. Lately I've been using a multi-level bit pool:

I don’t eat at Steak ‘n Shake very often (their transparency and ownership have always been a little weird to me), but a new controversy I just read about is pretty silly. During remodels, they may add a QR code scanner for soft drink refills. Basically, you scan proof of purchase so people can’t just order water and then help themselves to unlimited soda. Some folks are now boycotting because they have to scan their receipt each time. I think it’s a smart move that helps keep people honest. The entitlement is wild, people are genuinely mad about scanning a code for a free refill? Go to almost any other country where free refills barely exist (if at all) and they’d be begging for this system. 😂🥤

Anthony Volpe has a few new fans out there, out of spite for all of the Jose Cabellero chatter this year. Cabby just booted a ball and hasn't been great — especially lately — but that doesn't change the fact that Volpe's time with the Yankees should be over at this point. They're lucky the White Sox are just an AL Central mirage because this could have been bad.

I’ll be right there… I’m new at this! One of the most amazing things about being a parent is that there are new and special moments at every stage of development (right into adolescence and adulthood). But what a special time it is when babies emerge into toddlerhood - developing motor and language skills all at once. This little one, shared to IG by jamesandersonw10, is hitting these developmental milestones right and left, taking some of her first tentative steps while using language (which sounds very much like “coming!” - but could well be an effort to mimic dad’s “come on”), to cheer herself on. Talk about putting it all together! 🧩

"I am a free bird in water. I can move my entire body inside water, thanks to zero gravity. But my wheelchair keeps me caged on land." Geetha Kannan (42) is a wheelchaired person who LOVES swimming independently. Look at her swimming in the Nehru Stadium pool (video 1). She describes how she began doing exercises in water (hydrotherapy), & slowly began swimming 6 months ago. Now, she has bagged three gold medals in a state-level swimming competition in March. (Video 2) But she travels for 1.5 hours from Tambaram to Nehru Stadium every day for her two-hour swim, because #Chennai has barely two accessible pools out of seven public pools. There are around 1.5 lakh people with disabilities in the city and only 150 are trained in swimming lately. There are three Paralympic swimming gold medallists from the city, including Geetha. Not much money or efforts are needed to make a pool accessible. Ramps, tactile flooring, seating lifts, spacious toilets. Despite courts insisting on making every building accessible to all people, many spaces are not yet accessible, including pools, where disabled can feel 'abled'. Here is the play folks are asking about, and I don't see an error here. Triolo doesn't make an attempt at the runner going to second, so it cannot be a fielder's choice, and the struggle to get the ball out of his glove isn't an error unless there is a complete loss of contact/bobble with air, and I don't see that either, and Happ then beat out the play at first. I don't see where the error is because Happ is on the base before the ball gets to first. There is an error for the advancements after the bad throw, but I have a single and not an assumed out here.

This week highlighted a real problem with free-speech in the Welsh Parliament. When you have the Presiding Officer telling elected members they can't use language 'that has the potential to inflame debate', you don't have debate at all. Parliaments are exactly where difficult debates should be had, but these restrictive rules stifle such arguments, forcing Senedd Members to be silent on the issues that they were voted in for. Mark my words, Reform will always fight for free-speech. If that means some of us are kicked out of the Chamber for doing so, so be it.

Not relying on a LLM in your code editor? That doesn't make you smarter. All the opposite actually. You're actively refusing to increase your productivity and buy your time back for the sake of outdated habits. Because at the very least, a LLM helps you write tons of boilerplate/mundane code. If you don't want to pay, there are free alternatives to GitHub Copilot. You have no excuse. Don't be that grumpy developer who thinks being negative about trendy tech is cool.

Eagles Offense All22 thread vs. Bucs. 1) It wasn't perfect all game, but I think we have now reached the point with Hurts where I don't fear the blitz at all. The progression this year has been obvious. He is fine with free rushers in his face and will stand and deliver. This was a big 3rd down conversion on the 1st drive. It's another area of his game where he has made significant improvements.

People argue endlessly about whether prison exists to rehabilitate, punish, or simply lock dangerous people away from society. But the news keeps showing us cases where none of those answers work. Some people are evil enough that they don’t deserve rehabilitation. They don’t deserve punishment as our prisons deliver it. And locking them up at public expense for decades still feels like a failure of justice. Maybe we should bring back some options we’ve been too squeamish to use. But unfortunately, we’re at a point where we’re not even sure if some activist judge will let such people walk.

If I knew nothing about AI and wanted to become AI-native in 30 days, this is what I'd do: < sign up for free Anthropic courses < use Claude to study pre-exam < once certified, extract the course content to a Claude project < prompt Claude: "Based on this course, build me a 201 version and some real hands-on exams to test my knowledge." < Complete 201 < Rinse and repeat There isn't a faster way to learn AI right now (+ this is 100% free).

A student built a real anti-gravity machine… using an Arduino. How to Make an Acoustic Levitator: Arduino Nano + motor driver + about 60 ultrasonic transducers. They all emit ~40 kHz sound. The sound waves meet and form fixed pockets in the air. Tiny bits of styrofoam get stuck in those pockets and just hang there. If you put your hand in, the pattern breaks and they fall. Same principle labs use to move droplets or samples without touching them. OMG! The libtards in NYC are so st00pid! The bills sent to the landlords do not stop. There isn't a feeeze on their property taxes. What you gonna do when you have a leaky roof and the landlord can't afford to fix it ? Then what ? Cause that is what is gonna happen. The building will fall down all around you. But hey... at least you have a freeze on your rent.. right? Oh...and that does NOT mean that you don't have to PAY rent. It just means it won't be raised. Some of the people in the comment section on articles regarding this rent freeze amaze me with all of their stupidity. 🤦‍♀️🙄
