As U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star began icebreaking operations for Operation Deep Freeze 2026, the cutter marked 50 years of service by breaking through Antarctic pack ice to ensure safe navigation and sustain U.S. operations in the polar regions. When the cruise ship Scenic Eclipse II became beset in Antarctic pack ice, Polar Star responded immediately, breaking it free and escorting it to open water — underscoring the importance of a robust U.S. icebreaker fleet. Today, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Kimball (WMSL-756) offloaded 18,898 pounds of cocaine with an estimated value of $214.3 million.
