Warren Buffett on why he ignores the financial statement Wall Street obsesses over: He shares an approach to analyzing companies that runs counter to how Wall Street typically evaluates businesses. "I spend more time looking at balance sheets than I do income statements. And Wall Street really doesn't pay much attention to balance sheets, but I like to look at balance sheets over an 8 or 10 year period before I even look at the income account." His reasoning comes down to one thing: reliability of the numbers. "There are certain things it's harder to hide or play games with on the balance sheet than you can with the income statement." But Buffett doesn't claim any single financial statement holds all the answers. Warren Buffett explains: "Neither one gives you the total answer on anything, but you still ought to understand what the figures are saying and what they don't say and what they can't say and what the management would like them to say that the auditors wouldn't like them to say." Thoughts on $CPRT valuation and buybacks "Right now, it's at one of its cheapest valuations it's been at in decades. So, they have some four-ish billions of dollars of cash on the balance sheet, so you back that out and the interest expense associated with that, and it's trading around 16 to 17 times earnings. So one of the cheapest valuations they've had. They've also been extremely selective when they've bought back stock. So they do not regularly buy back stock, but when they do, they make it meaningful, and they're very selective on the valuation, and last quarter was the first time they really bought back a meaningful slug of stock. They bought back $1.4 billion. As I mentioned, they still have another four-ish billions of dollars in cash on their balance sheet, so I would expect them to extinguish a good amount of that cash. Even if they do have to invest more in operations and all that, they should still have plenty of ability to do both. And so that's pretty interesting in terms of a signal because, again, this is not a company that regularly buys back stock. In fact, the last time they really were buyers of their stock was in 2019, but they haven't bought back a big amount of stock since 2011. So it's been that long since they've really taken a good slug of their common shares and retired that. So, that to me is a signal, and take that for what it's worth."

Every time I go to an event, in the car, on the way home, I email every person I met that night that I want to progress a conversation with. 99% of people do not do this. I've always hated when founders take on venture debt. Part of it is that founders forget that they have to pay it back. They treat it like venture capital and they forget about that, and then they get surprised. But the other thing I've never liked about it is it makes you more fragile. It basically subjects you to a bunch of business covenants, and it makes it harder for you to do an abrupt shift in your business, because now you've got a bank looking over your shoulder and they want to make sure they get paid, and they have to review your financials and all the rest of it. And to your point, J Cal, the companies that have free cash flow right now are the ones that again, have the most maneuverability. I hate taking away maneuverability from founders, and that is what debt does because it subjects you to a fixed schedule of payments. And so this is always a thing to remember, whether you're a business or you are an individual, when you put on that debt, it makes you more vulnerable to big disruptions in the market.”
