A massive magnetic pulse was observed at the exact 30:37 UTC moment of the M7.3 earthquake in Japan, with solar wind at 8 nT Bt and -7 nT Bz (strong connection to Earth), and in the immediate three hours that followed there was a G1 geomagnetic storm though solar wind conditions overall were nominal. The seismic waves rippled across the entire globe as we can see here with our GMV visualization.

Here’s your space weather report for the week of June 5 - 11: • 1 M-class flare • 5 C-class flares • 36 coronal mass ejections • 1 geomagnetic storm (as of June 12, though another one is currently forecast for June 13) This video from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the week’s activity. This week’s most powerful flare was an M1.8 on June 6, which erupts from the southeastern (lower left) region of the Sun’s disk at about 0:42 in this video. That eruption also produced a coronal mass ejection that reached Earth three days later, but the bulk of the blast was oriented to the south and east of Earth, so the effect on our planet was minimal. It was a quite calm week on the Sun, with a moderate geomagnetic storm occurring on Aug. 8 after several coronal mass ejections arrived at Earth together. There was also a total solar eclipse on Aug. 12. How come SDO didn't see it? SDO follows a “geosynchronous” orbit, orbiting Earth at the same rate as Earth spins. The spacecraft effectively “hovers” over its ground station in White Sands, New Mexico. White Sands was outside of the eclipse’s path, so SDO didn’t see it. Visualize SDO’s orbit:

A major G4 to G5 geomagnetic storm is expected to hit Earth today. G5 is the highest the scale goes. This could bring the Northern Lights extremely far south (last night's G4 reached Texas), but there's a catch. We won't know if the storm is a "home run" or a "curveball" until it arrives.

Yesterday's G4 geomagnetic storm was historic. The Coronal Mass Ejection raced toward Earth at 1,300 km/s - among the fastest on record. What saved Earth was orientation. For most of the impact, the critical BZ component stayed northward, acting like a closed door and blocking efficient energy transfer into Earth's magnetosphere. This CME had the speed and strength of a monster, but its magnetic field was pointed the wrong way. Had the BZ turned south while maintaining this intensity, Earth would have seen Carrington-like event. We got lucky.

NASA’s ESCAPADE mission successfully launched yesterday, Nov. 13, 2025! But it wasn’t without any hiccups — or maybe violent burps? — from the Sun! ☀️🌬️ The launch of ESCAPADE, our next mission to Mars, was delayed by a day due to the most powerful geomagnetic storm of 2025. The storm was caused by multiple flares and eruptions known as coronal mass ejections heading toward Earth. With the help of NASA satellites and models, the team could monitor when the storm subsided and by the following day, it was safe to launch.
