Friendly reminder that a low vert fourseam isn't automatically "dead zone." Sale's 4S averaged just 11.9" of vert in 2018 at 95.1 mph. But it was an outlier in other ways (vertical and horizontal approach angle). Pure filth.

Andrew Painter looks like a man changed: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 8 K, 20 Whiffs Changes? Grip *differences* look more like natural variance than anything -- would assume the body is moving differently: presetting into the glute + holding that hinge but the 4S looks legit It's the second start in a row where he's sitting over 97.0 MPH with over 18" of vert and a flatter approach than what we're used to, not to mention nearly 2500 RPM. The 4S missed a ton of bats and generated chases at a high clip -- not including touching 100 MPH on his 100th pitch Secondaries only seem to improve. The trio of breakers collectively got over 40% whiff, while the changeup induced plenty of weak contact + chases below the zone. Command of the split-change to lefties was near-perfect + slider was commanded well to both sides. 4S and sweeper found the middle a bit too often, but Painter was able to mix it well enough to keep the hitters unbalanced. With Nola's resurgence, Phillies staff might be a five-headed monster

Surveillance camera catches a 90-year-old man driving around 70 to 100 MPH crashing into a coffee shop in Los Gatos, California, after 9 PM on Thanksgiving. This was in a 20 MPH zone. Everything in the shop was destroyed. The driver was taken to the hospital in a “serious but stable” condition and that alcohol might have played a roll in the incident. The store was closed and unoccupied at the time. Otherwise there would regularly be many people there. As bad as this crash was, it was a miracle it wasn’t monumentally worse.

Will Ray (Wake Forest Baseball) was one of the most dominant relievers on the Cape this summer. The former two-way showcased a high 80s - low 90s sinker from a sidearm slot with plenty of run and a sweeping slider that limited hitters to an average of 68.2 mph EV and a 0.59 xFIP (per Anthony Marotta as of 7/19). It's a plus pitch that was used more than the sinker and acts as his best offering. He also mixed in a splitter with some sink to get miss in and out of the zone. He appeared in 14 games for the Whitecaps on the Cape, limiting hard contact and base-runners with a 1.18 WHIP, 23 K/2 BB in 22 IP. Ray's stuff played well in the lower half of the zone but was susceptible to the long ball at times. Perhaps adding a four-seam FB that could get some chase at the top of the zone could help his overall profile. As of 7/23, Ray was 100th percentile in hard-hit % and 93rd percentile in opponent average exit speed (per Anthony Marotta). Ray made significant progress in his control and as a result, dropped his 4.9 BB/9 in 44 IP last spring to just 0.8 BB/9 in 22 IP this summer in the CCBL. He was able to make some of the top offensive college bats look foolish (Kurland - sinker, Burress - slider, Martinez - splitter; shown below).

I just noticed that Andy Pages has a new "best catch of the year" according to catch probability, and it's a great example of how watching the advanced stats can tell you things you won't get from watching on TV. This was the last play of the game last Wednesday. Bogaerts hit the ball 102.3 MPH at a 15° launch angle, and Pages covered 45 feet in 2.9 seconds and did it so efficiently he didn't even have to leave his feet. Statcast has it at just a 5% catch probability.

The A's continue to stack up on young left-handed pitching, selecting Mason Edwards (2nd round, pick 47). Edwards wields a 91-94 mph four-seam averaging ~21 iVB, although the pitch plays below its raw carry from a very high 6.6 ft. release height. Likely needs to be 93-95 for big league success, swing-and-miss somewhat lacked. The secondaries and their potential make Edwards the prospect he is. From the over-the-top release, his 80 mph curveball generates strong two-plane movement (-10/11) at a very steep approach. Strong command of the offering, ability to use at high frequency. While he didn't use it too often, Edwards' changeup has massive promise, also on a very steep plane from his heavily vertical release. Showed velocity and movement separation from his four-seam, projects as a great weapon vs. RHH. Boasted an elite whiff rate >50%. Needs more consistent feel and usage. The southpaw's slider is also a work in progress and was non-existent in many outings this year, but it will be a critical bridge pitch in his arsenal. 80-82 mph with inconsistent shape. With such a large vertical distinction between his four-seam and curveball, Edwards needs a hard, tight slider to sit between the pair and make swing decisions tougher. Hopefully, the A's can find a mid-80s pitch in gyro territory. The largest area for growth with Edwards is his command, as he posted a walk rate >10% in each of his three collegiate seasons (11.9% junior year). In my opinion, it seemed like he was always pitching for punchouts and around the edges of the plate. I think more strikes should come with more in-zone emphasis in early counts, and he has the stuff to never worry about being over the plate. With some velocity progression and refinement of his changeup and slider, I find it very likely Mason Edwards becomes at least of middle of the rotation starting pitcher. A's have a stellar crop of young southpaws.

Hayden Panettiere is dead at 36. Her rep confirmed it Sunday. Cause and manner still unknown. Three months ago she got it all on paper. In May she put out a memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning." The alcoholism. The abuse she survived. The postpartum depression that led her to give up custody of her daughter in 2018. She dedicated it to her brother Jansen, dead at 28 in 2023. She wrote the whole reckoning down first. Then she was gone too.
