🚨 From Bernie to “Full-Fledged Communists”: Inside DSA’s Radicalization Christopher Winston, known by many for his online moniker BlackRedGuard, is never one to hide behind language or dodge a question. He says people who entered DSA through Bernie Sanders have since become “full-fledged communists.” He says younger members are... drawn to Red Rabbits, DSA security team largely focused on protests, because they like seeing DSA “actually taking this stuff seriously.” And a lot has changed in the last few years for Winston as he became a national DSA leader. He is co-chair of National AfroSoc, sits on the steering committee of a national Red Rabbits Security Commission, leads a local Red Rabbits subcommittee, and serves as a political education co-chair. Meanwhile, he openly talks about “toppling and overthrowing this shit,” says “the proletariat must eventually eat up the bourgeoisie,” upholds “protracted people’s war,” and would like to see the state become a Maoist “proletarian weapon.” These are tame considering other past comments on his. What I wish journalists interviewing DSA leaders would do is move beyond simply accepting the “big tent” explanation and actually press them on the figures gaining influence inside the organization. Christopher Winston is a perfect example. If someone holds multiple local and national roles while openly advocating Marxist-Leninist-Maoist politics, “protracted people’s war,” and revolutionary state power, DSA’s leadership should be asked directly what that says about the organization’s trajectory.show more

🚨 Inside DSA’s “Workers Deserve More” Socialism 2026 Panel: Abolish the Senate, Build “Militant” Unions, and Use a “Roadmap” to the “Big Thing” Not everyone is going to have time to sit through the full Hasan Piker panel on DSA’s “Workers Deserve More” program at Socialism 2026, so here are some of my favorite moments that really hammer home what DSA’s national leaders, with Hasan as hype man, say they are trying to build. DSA national co-chair Megan Romer says, “we know we’re not abolishing the Senate tomorrow.” Instead, the program is a “roadmap” for DSA politicians, chapters, and union organizers to push toward goals like social housing, moving “a little policy here and a little policy there” that can “eventually build up to this big thing.” Fellow national co-chair Ashik Siddique says DSA is “not formally a party, although we are functioning more and more like one,” while describing an internal debate ranging from formally breaking away and creating a new party to trying to “realign the Democratic Party.” Michaela Branagan, co-chair of the Workers Deserve More Program Committee, casually says, “we also talk about abolishing the Senate because who needs a Senate, right?” She also points to “powerful militant democratic unions” as part of DSA’s vision of what “real democracy” should look like. This clip with James Harr of Means Workwear and James Ray of Philly DSA shows something else, how DSA can function as a target for radical organizing and entryism. Ray is a great example of the kind of organizer who enters DSA not because it is the most disciplined revolutionary party, or even the closest fit for his politics, but because it has the biggest membership base, the most infrastructure, and people he believes can be moved further left. As Harr puts it, “Any person that comes into the DSA is already more open to the most radical position that you could have.” He then says, “Entering into that space as an ML [Marxist-Leninist] is the most fruitful ground for talking to people and convincing them of the most radical position.” What is being articulated here is entryism, reframed as organic organizing within a mass-membership institution.

🚨 Democrats Are an “Imperialist Apparatus,” and an Ossoff-AOC Ticket Would Make This DSA Insider “Die a Little Inside” I went a little long on this supercut, but Philly DSA’s James Ray gave Briahna Joy Gray what I’d call a very good “everyman DSA” interview. They cover a lot of ground, from the Democratic Party as an oppositional force, to a genuinely useful explainer of DSA’s factional caucuses for anyone unfamiliar with the DSA Left vs. DSA Right, to the cross-caucus consensus behind DSA’s platform and the internal debate over an AOC presidential run. “The Democrats exist as another wing of an imperialist apparatus to ensure the maintenance of capital and to ensure the maintenance of US empire.” Ray says socialist elected officials operating as Democrats should be “consistently agitating” through “maximalist political rhetoric and actions.” On AOC, he calls her “a political careerist” and says even “defund [the police]” amounts to “moderate demands if you’re a socialist.” Then there’s the potential nightmare scenario of AOC ending up as Jon Ossoff’s VP. Gray jokes about people who think it would “mean so much to America if Jon Ossoff had a VP that was AOC,” and Ray says that outcome would make him “die a little on the inside.” A lot of people claim to be experts on DSA. I always find it more useful to go directly to the source and just listen. This interview is a great example of a DSA primary source. Ray is an up-and-coming and increasingly influential figure within the organization, and you get a much better sense of its internal politics by hearing him explain them in his own words. The fact that he thinks Jacobin has drifted too far to the right may capture the political moment, and the entryism at work inside DSA, better than almost anything else in the interview.

🚨 Dave Smith’s DSA Analysis Falls Apart Immediately Libertarians, you don’t have to agree with me on everything. But if you want serious DSA coverage based on what the organization is actually saying and doing internally, please consider my work. Dave Smith’s DSA analysis is not good, which is shocking given how confidently he talks about it, the fact that he is a libertarian, and his ties to New York. He gets a few things right, but this is not high-level analysis of the socialist left. The most revealing part is that Dave seems unsure whether Zohran Mamdani is actually a democratic socialist or meaningfully connected to DSA. Zohran is one of DSA’s clearest success stories, someone recruited, trained, elevated, and elected through the movement. He is the poster boy for DSA and one of the clearest examples of DSA’s project to build power through the Democratic ballot line. Dave treats all of this like little-d little-s “democratic socialism,” as if these are just welfare liberals who are not really socialists and occasionally latch onto whatever issue is trending. But DSA is not randomly latching onto wokeism, Bernie, Gaza, Iran, or Lebanon. These positions flow from a worldview. When DSA “latches onto” something, whether it is anti-ICE activism, Gaza, or labor militancy, it is usually because the organization wants to operate inside the broader movement space and pull those fights into its socialist project. Libertarians should be the people most interested in getting this right. If your opponents are openly trying to put government, unions, and socialist institutions into every corner of economic and civic life while building a democratic socialist republic, you should probably know what they actually believe.

🚨 Is This Chris Cuomo Surrendering to DSA? Is DSA the Future of the Democratic Party? This Chris Cuomo segment almost feels like a surrender to the DSA. Cuomo frames the Democratic Socialists of America as the Democrats’ best shot at capturing populist affordability anger, then brings on DSA co-chair Ashik Siddique to make the socialist case. And who is the counterpoint? John Morgan of Morgan & Morgan, a Democratic mega-donor law-firm guy warning that socialism leads to Cuba and Venezuela. If the public face of the anti-DSA argument inside Democratic politics is a wealthy establishment Democrat telling people to trust the old Bill Clinton model while sounding like a Cold War PSA, then DSA has already won the optics fight before Ashik even opens his mouth. The worst part is that Morgan is basically right about the danger. He is just the worst possible messenger for it. If I had his ear, I would have told him to stop doing generic “socialism bad” warnings and get specific. Hit DSA on its own record. Hit them on their repeated delegations to Cuba and Venezuela, the praise for socialist regimes, the constant laundering of authoritarian politics through “solidarity,” and the new DSA platform coming this July, which I broke the news on. Saying “socialism bad” in the abstract does nothing. The argument has to be specific. DSA is bad by its own words and actions. By the delegations it sends, the regimes it flatters, the platform it passes, and the radicals it keeps elevating. Cuomo basically tees Siddique up as young and plugged into the future of the party. Morgan comes off like a dinosaur. And if he is serious about taking back his party, whoever is advising him on how to talk about DSA is doing him no favors.

🚨 DSA’s Future Leaders Say the Organization Is White Supremacist, Paternalistic, and Protecting Abusers This Young Democratic Socialists of America meeting was really something. These candidates are running for seats on YDSA’s national leadership body and could become some of DSA’s future leaders. Yet much of the discussion focused on what they described as the organization’s entrenched problems with white supremacy, patriarchy, anti-Blackness, racism, harassment, abusers, and its reputation as “five white guys sitting around and reading theory.” The candidates did not confine these criticisms to a few isolated chapters. They described whiteness, racism, and “white-centered organizational practices” as problems extending across local YDSA chapters, YDSA’s national structures, and the broader DSA organization. I do not generally think it is fair to reduce DSA to simply a “white organization.” Its membership and culture can vary considerably by chapter and region. I would describe the organization more broadly as overeducated, downwardly mobile, and arguably elitist. That said, DSA’s national leadership does play some remarkably vicious internal games, conduct that Cliff Connolly has described as “bureaucratic freakery.” Perhaps that is the deeper dysfunction these aspiring leaders are picking up on, even if they interpret it primarily through the language of whiteness and white supremacy. But it is still remarkable to hear so many aspiring DSA leaders portray both YDSA and the national organization as fundamentally shaped by white supremacy. That said, DSA’s national leadership does play some remarkably vicious internal games, conduct that Cliff Connolly has described as “bureaucratic freakery.” Perhaps that is the deeper dysfunction these aspiring leaders are picking up on, even if they interpret it primarily through the language of whiteness and white supremacy. But it is still remarkable to hear so many aspiring DSA leaders portray both YDSA and the national organization as fundamentally shaped by white supremacy.
