She is struggling for a way to respond. The slightest ask for explanation of their bumper-sticker slogans bewilders these people. She comes up with "I'm more concerned about billionaires." So she doesn't directly answer the question. Remnick follows up: "I guess what I'm asking is how much is too much?" She can't answer that either. So she says "it's more about what are you doing to keep and maintain and get that wealth in the first place." That sounds a lot like 'We will decide if your wealth is virtuous or not.' She ends with: No matter how you became a millionaire, the DSA wants to "tax the hell" out of you. Sure to be a very popular statement in campaign year for Democrats. She's never received even mild scrutiny of her nonsensical talking points — and it shows.

But if you want serious DSA coverage based on what the organization is actually saying and doing internally, please consider my work. Dave Smith’s DSA analysis is not good, which is shocking given how confidently he talks about it, the fact that he is a libertarian, and his ties to New York. He gets a few things right, but this is not high-level analysis of the socialist left. The most revealing part is that Dave seems unsure whether Zohran Mamdani is actually a democratic socialist or meaningfully connected to DSA. Zohran is one of DSA’s clearest success stories, someone recruited, trained, elevated, and elected through the movement. He is the poster boy for DSA and one of the clearest examples of DSA’s project to build power through the Democratic ballot line. Dave treats all of this like little-d little-s “democratic socialism,” as if these are just welfare liberals who are not really socialists and occasionally latch onto whatever issue is trending. But DSA is not randomly latching onto wokeism, Bernie, Gaza, Iran, or Lebanon. These positions flow from a worldview. When DSA “latches onto” something, whether it is anti-ICE activism, Gaza, or labor militancy, it is usually because the organization wants to operate inside the broader movement space and pull those fights into its socialist project. Libertarians should be the people most interested in getting this right. If your opponents are openly trying to put government, unions, and socialist institutions into every corner of economic and civic life while building a democratic socialist republic, you should probably know what they actually believe.

🚨 NYC DSA’s Albany Ambition Slips Out on Their First Call Since Mamdani’s Win On last night’s NYC DSA Zoom call, the first since Mamdani’s victory, Jamaal Bowman said the quiet part out loud. He urged members to build an “organizing infrastructure, ecosystem and machine that helps to decide the next big statewide race, which is the governor’s race next year.” Most of Mamdani’s agenda is budgetary. To enact it, NYC DSA needs both the governor and enough legislative power to pass and fund it through Albany’s budget process. But here is their problem. The only person in their orbit who could seriously challenge Hochul is AOC. And NYC DSA has never had the smoothest relationship with her. AOC is the only figure with the name recognition, the national fundraising base, and the movement pull to make a real statewide run. And she may be looking past Albany entirely, with growing talk of a 2028 presidential bid. If she skips it, NYC DSA has no viable contender. If they want the governor’s mansion, their entire path still runs through AOC.

They advocate for a world in which ordinary working people in all countries have full control over their own society and future. Terms and conditions apply. Offer not valid in Eastern Europe. Because DSA has a weirdly specific obsession with one issue: Opposing security alliances for smaller European democracies that happen to border Russia. It doesn’t make much sense. Especially when you compare it with their militant anti-imperialist position on a very select few other international causes. And it is particularly baffling to Europe’s democratic socialists who have had a key role supporting NATO since its founding, exactly because it fits with all their lofty goals based on international cooperation. More recently, both Finland and Sweden had democratic socialist-led governments when they initiated their process to join NATO. To be fair, the Democratic Socialists of America may not recognise their European counterparts because they are unfamiliar with the whole concept of getting elected and doing actual work, rather than just shouting vague slogans and hoping no one asks follow up questions. And this is where Romer gets repeatedly stuck in this interview with David Remnick, host of The New Yorker Radio Hour. Romer says they would “tax the hell out of millionaires” so is asked some very simple questions that allow her to provide substance to that as a tax policy. “Uhh, yeah, you know, again, I don’t have like a solid [answer], but…” Romer says, laughing nervously. Remnick asks whether she should know the answer as a leader of the organisation. “Um, that’s a good question,” she says, flustered. It’s important to note, therefore, that Romer is at least capable of some shame. Then, on the issue of Ukraine, she sets her own trap and walks straight into it. DSA has been heavily criticised for amplifying Russian propaganda, especially since the build up to Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine. Their argument is basically that if Eastern Europeans don’t want to be attacked then they shouldn’t act so provocatively. Knowing how much criticism they got for that, Romer was keen to somehow regain a moral high ground so she quickly tries to switch the subject from not supporting to Ukraine to not liking Putin’s Russia either …from a strictly socialist perspective. The problem with Russia, she says, is that it’s “right wing” and “hyper capitalist” so of course it’s a danger. Yeah, very insightful analysis, Romer. Except wasn’t there famously a left wing version of it too, relatively recently, which also invaded neighbours? Remnick asks the more relevant follow up question. Isn’t this precisely why those countries [facing Russian aggression] wanted to join NATO? In the next excruciating few seconds, we see her shame again, but perhaps also a brief moment of introspection. Until now, denying agency of non-Americans has been the real core of Romer and the DSA’s worldview. She thinks that she and her fellow Americans are solely responsible for everything, everywhere, all at once. “We created Putin,” she has said. In fact, “damn near every supervillain of the past 50 years was our creation.” The goal of US foreign policy should be simply to “not create more Putins”, according to Romer. It’s a comforting delusion because it offers an easy answer for every complex problem. Just do nothing. But - maybe, just maybe - before Romer scrambled to arrange her words, we may have witnessed a brief flash of realisation that people living in other countries also have agency and also like security. And we all benefit more from that when we cooperate as countries, regardless of where we all fit on the great horse shoe spectrum of politics.

In fact, “damn near every supervillain of the past 50 years was our creation.” The goal of US foreign policy should be simply to “not create more Putins”, according to Romer. She explains that communism has always sold the same simple, seductive pitch to young and idealistic people. It sounds good. It never works. Russia, the Soviet Union, China, Venezuela, etc. She draws the exact historical parallel that exists today: - The Mensheviks were the mainstream, more moderate left of their day (think regular Democrats). - The Bolsheviks were the radical faction that treated the larger party as a Trojan horse. They entered it, radicalized it from the inside, and eventually seized control. That tactic is called entryism. Today’s Democratic Socialists of America are running the same playbook. 🚨 Denver DSA Says the Quiet Parts Out Loud A lot has been said about Melat Kiros, but not nearly as much about Denver DSA. So here is Denver DSA in its own words. At a recent meeting, the chapter defined socialism as “the economy and society” being run “by the community as a whole” rather than “to make profits for a few.” That may sound soft, but it is a sweeping definition that sounds more communist-adjacent. Denver DSA described abolition as “organizing toward a world without police and prisons,” and said its abolition working group has backed bail fundraisers, jail support, know your rights trainings, and “pressure campaigns to decrease Denver police budgets.” The chapter also highlighted pressure campaigns on Denver City Council, including one around a bill “to stop encampment sweeps of unhoused people during freezing temperatures.” That pressure worked, at least at first. City Council passed the bill, but Mayor Mike Johnston thankfully vetoed it. The rest of the meeting was just as revealing. They said they do not have “risky conversations” or “dubious conversations” on Slack and instead take those into “better channels.” They highlighted co-marching with PSL after October 7, saying they were “one of the first and loudest groups” locally talking about “Palestinian liberation.” They also pointed to the student encampment, “the 2nd longest running student encampment in the country,” and said they “gained a lot of members from that moment.” Their international work is focused on “supporting Palestinian liberation” and “supporting Cuban self-determination,” including material aid work. Their migrant justice working group says it organizes “to abolish ICE” and passes out whistle kits so community members can alert each other to the presence of ICE officers. 🚨 Denver DSA Says the Quiet Parts Out Loud A lot has been said about Melat Kiros, but not nearly as much about Denver DSA. So here is Denver DSA in its own words. At a recent meeting, the chapter defined socialism as “the economy and society” being run “by the community as a whole” rather than “to make profits for a few.” That may sound soft, but it is a sweeping definition that sounds more communist-adjacent. Denver DSA described abolition as “organizing toward a world without police and prisons,” and said its abolition working group has backed bail fundraisers, jail support, know your rights trainings, and “pressure campaigns to decrease Denver police budgets.” The chapter also highlighted pressure campaigns on Denver City Council, including one around a bill “to stop encampment sweeps of unhoused people during freezing temperatures.” That pressure worked, at least at first. City Council passed the bill, but Mayor Mike Johnston thankfully vetoed it. The rest of the meeting was just as revealing. They said they do not have “risky conversations” or “dubious conversations” on Slack and instead take those into “better channels.” They highlighted co-marching with PSL after October 7, saying they were “one of the first and loudest groups” locally talking about “Palestinian liberation.” They also pointed to the student encampment, “the 2nd longest running student encampment in the country,” and said they “gained a lot of members from that moment.” Their international work is focused on “supporting Palestinian liberation” and “supporting Cuban self-determination,” including material aid work. Their migrant justice working group says it organizes “to abolish ICE” and passes out whistle kits so community members can alert each other to the presence of ICE officers. 🚨 DSA Elevates Organizer Training Young Socialists to Infiltrate Workplaces and Radicalize Unions James Hernández and Mae Bracelin, both Bread & Roses–backed labor organizers, have won election as YDSA co-chairs and will now sit on DSA’s National Political Committee. Hernández, an organizer with Florida International University YDSA, says young people are “downwardly mobile” and should commit themselves to class struggle by taking jobs in strategically important sectors such as health care, education, and Amazon. She says 400 YDSA members have already committed to “industrializing.” Organizers are developing cohorts to politically educate them, prepare them to enter the workforce, and help YDSA chapters identify major employers to “salt collectively.” Salting means deliberately taking a job at a targeted workplace to organize it from within.
