Ghostty nightly now supports the `click_events` extension introduced by Kitty and supported by Fish. If you're using Fish 4.1+, you can click (no modifiers!) anywhere at a prompt to move the mouse. I believe Ghostty is the first to support this extension outside of Kitty. As far as as I can find, the only shell to support this is Fish (4.1+) and the only terminal to support this previously is Kitty. It'd be great for more of both ecosystems to support this. Other terminals do support moving the cursor with the mouse to some extent (Ghostty included since 1.0), but do so by another, more fragile mechanism: when you click, it just best-effort calculates a number of synthetic left arrow key inputs to pretend to move your cursor. This is super fragile because it can't take into account shell behaviors particularly around indention, multi-line, and if you're not at a prompt at all... The `click_events` extension allows Ghostty to know when you're at a prompt line, and works by encoding a mouse click event while at a prompt line to the shell. The shell then takes over and handles all the logic of moving the cursor, which makes the most sense! PR:

day 4 of building an OpenCode clone from scratch i have a newfound appreciation for how good this tool is, and how much attention to detail was put into making it. here is what i managed to clone, and problems i've encountered: 1. scrollable autocomplete. mouse click to select, mousewheel to scroll, arrow keys that auto-scroll when you hit the edge, enter to confirm, sounds simple, but remember that this is a CLI tool, not a web app, all of this has to be implemented from the ground up 2. toast notifications in the terminal, success/error/info variants, auto-dismiss, easily triggerable through context 3. modal dialogs with backdrop overlay, click-outside-to-close, escape to dismiss, focus trapping so the content behind stops capturing input, again, seems simple, but the concept of a "dialog" does not exist in the terminal, so implementing it is way harder 4. built a responder chain for keyboard input, only the topmost layer owns the keyboard. ctrl+c walks down: dialog > command menu > clear input > exit. had to invent this because there's no built-in focus management in a terminal 5. generic command actions. each command gets a context with toast, dialog, and navigate (easily extendable for further features) 6. react-router with a memory router in a terminal app. navigate between screens with the same patterns as web 7. First of its kind? New feature in Ghostty: a web-inspector-style "terminal inspector" targeted at CLI, TUI developers. Built right into the terminal, you can see a live view of terminal state, keyboard events, escape sequences, and much much more. 👻💖 Video tour below. Similar to Firebug with Firefox, I'm hoping this helps usher in a new era of develop-ability for terminal applications by making it much much easier to understand what is going on. When the inspector is not in use, there is no perceivable performance impact (benchmarks show the same). When the inspector is in use, the terminal it is inspecting slows down to about half speed due to the overhead. But this only impacts the terminal being inspected. This is a really early version of the inspector. The data organization is kind of messy, its mostly read-only information right now, and there is a lot more information I want to surface. The next step is making a lot of this data read-write so you can actually modify the terminal live (similar to modifying HTML/CSS live in a web inspector) to trial-and-error some changes. A little bit more on my Novel editor. One of the things I loath about word processors is that they are so unaware of how prose is structured. They treat the line as the most atomic unit of text. But writers think in words, sentences, and paragraphs. Never lines. The editor I am working on has navigation tools for word, sentence, paragraph, and scene. You can navigate and move content at each level. All from the keyboard with some intuitive hotkeys. A pointing device like trackpad or mouse engages the part of your brain that processes spatial input. That's not where you want to be when writing. It can take you out of your flow state. And it is physically quite slow because your hands must move away from the keyboard. So I'm rethinking editing with the keyboard. It's not hard to learn, and it makes editing faster. I haven't been using it long and already I'm barely reaching for the trackpad. Follow me to be the first to try this out. #WritingCommunity

today Atlas celebrates it's first anniversary (one day old) so naturally, it's time for v1.1 → the #1 request: play videos & gifs right in the grid (toggle it on in settings) → full svg + pdf support (super handy for storing logos and icons) → ⌘-scroll to zoom (great if you're on a mouse + generally app now is way more stable with a mouse) → like badges on thumbnails (hide-able in settings for a cleaner look) → space to open (macos quick look style, also works on hover) → pan the canvas like figma (space + drag, or middle mouse button) → quick-like straight from the grid with ⌥-click → reduced motion (if the bouncy animations are too much) → big performance boost for power users (tested on a 50K item library) and many more. most of these improvements were based on feature requests and feedback from the app. please keep them coming. i’ve made the mistake of not listening to users enough in the past, trying things differently this time. download → (or use atlas — check for updates from the app's menu)

As many of you know, for the last five months I've been working full-time on my next big thing. The challenge was to invent something new and implement it entirely using LLMs for writing code. The first stage of the project is now complete: the web application, which I called is now online and accepting users. You can see a short demo in the video. 100% of the code of the app was generated by LLMs (mostly Gemini and Claude, maybe 10% of ChatGPT). I haven't written a single line of code. The tech stack is TypeScript, React, and Supabase/Postgres which was (and still is) fully new to me. During these five months, I implemented from scratch three versions of the software. It started as a Markdown editor to help me with my book writing and ended up as an AI-assisted reading and self-learning platform. What makes ChapterPal unique is a novel reading experience where the user can use the keyboard keys to reveal or "unreveal" the content and ask questions at any moment. (Mouse wheel, touchpad, smartphone screen, and voice input are also supported.) The LLM receives the entire content of the chapter and tries to answer questions based on the chapter's content, which reduces the chance of hallucination to the minimum. (Though not to 0%, of course, but near it.) This way of content consumption is known as **active reading,** a strategy for engaging with a text to improve comprehension and retention by consciously interacting with the material. The goal is to move beyond passive reading to a deeper understanding of the text and to remember key information more effectively. The registration on ChapterPal is via the waiting list. This is to avoid unexpected load spikes and cloud charges. Usually, it takes less than 24 hours for me to activate a user. Give it a try and let me know what you think. The next stage is finishing the content ingestion pipeline, which will automatically convert high-quality content from sources like HTML, PDF, and LaTeX into Markdown. Obviously, only those pieces whose licenses allow creating copies. ChapterPal has its own collection of textbooks and articles on AI, machine learning, and data science topics. If you don't find a piece of content you would like to read in ChapterPal's collection, a Chrome extension, ChapterPal Uploader, allows you to upload any PDF or HTML page to ChapterPal in one click. Actual hardware capture of the latest build of jnmartin's #Doom 64 port to the Sega #Dreamcast, which has now become the definitive, prettiest way to enjoy the title, with its dynamic lighting and bump mapping. SO MUCH NEW SHIT TO TALK ABOUT: First of all, this is the very first game to utilize the brand new "hybrid" vertex submission mechanism we just added to KallistiOS. It was a long, cruel week to get all of the issues there sorted out, but they have been, and it has further boosted the game's performance while under load and is now something the rest of the DC community can utilize in their homebrew. This scene in particular used to lag using the traditional, DMA-based vertex submission mechanism with all of the lights and its higher geometric complexity, but notice it's not even dropping a frame now! Next, support for the Dreamcast's MOUSE and KEYBOARD have been added. These controls play EXTREMELY well and feel like a very smooth, natural way to play the game, if you want the Steam/PC control scheme. Finally... if there is any doubt as to whether the Dreamcast version is actually the definitive way to the play the game, jnmartin now allows you to export the assets from the (LEGALLY PURCHASED, DAMNIT!!!) Steam version, and import them into the Dreamcast version, where you can enjoy the extra bonus levels and campaign with the new and improved graphics! THIS IS NOW PUBLICLY AVAILABLE! Ghostty is getting automatic scrollback compression, resulting in 70 to 90% less physical memory usage. It happens incrementally when idle, so it had no measurable effect on IO throughput. I'm not aware of any other mainstream terminal that does this. Demo video below! The gains let us increase the default scrollback limit from 10MB to 50MB, because on average a full scrollback will still compress smaller than the prior limit. More history, for free. ("Unlimited", disk-paged history is on the roadmap too) Let's talk about cool implementation details, cause this was fun. First, the data structure and memory layout ("PageList") I wrote two years ago finally pays off! One of its traits is that screen memory is backed by a linked list of page-aligned, page-sized (or page-multiple-sized) blocks. Because each block is page-aligned and page-sized, we can use madvise to discard its physical backing while keeping the virtual address space reserved. Compressed pages therefore disappear from resident memory, but decompression is still guaranteed because the address space remains valid and we simply fault new pages back in as needed. We use the same trick for our memory pools, too. Unallocated pool pages don't count as resident memory, saving another couple of MB per terminal. This functionality is also available to libghostty-vt consumers via new `ghostty_terminal_compress` APIs. The consumer decides when the appropriate time to compress is and the APIs advise on compressability.

I've been building a music player with Next.js for fun. Web apps can share metadata about what media is playing (title, artist, album artwork) and sync play/pause/seek with system media controls. Works across modern browsers — even integrates with iOS dynamic island and shows up on lock screens: I set up my app like a PWA – it has a manifest.json file, so it can be installed to my iOS home screen or added to my dock on macOS. On iOS, it then uses the full screen height `100dvh` (dynamic viewport) and has padding on the bottom for the safe area with the `env()` CSS function. Finally, I was able to use the Vercel AI SDK in a script to clean up the metadata on audio files I downloaded from YouTube. What's next for OpenTUI? Here's a technical write-up. Over the last few months OpenTUI gained a lot of stability improvements, new unnecessary but fun features like live audio streaming, and useful features like rendering to the scrollback buffer mixed with a live TUI, called footer mode. Overall the feature set enables building large and complex applications. React and Solid make it super simple and convenient. There is still so much to do though. Three big milestones we have set out to achieve are: - Moving most of the behavioural logic currently living in TypeScript down to the native Zig core - Node compatibility - Optimizing the hell out of primitives like text rendering The render tree mechanisms are currently only usable from TypeScript. Think of the DOM, but controllable like a scene graph. Elements in the render tree are called renderables. They can expose a render method to draw themselves. All renderables are derived from a BaseRenderable. Renderables and the render tree will become native primitives. Building blocks usable from any language bindings. Reducing the TypeScript bindings to a very thin layer, with all the behavioural logic living in the native binary. Moving this down is not just a matter of porting TypeScript classes to Zig. TypeScript currently owns the tree, dirty-state propagation, layout reads, culling, and render ordering. If it still has to walk every node and call into native code for each step, we keep most of the complexity and add FFI overhead. Whole passes and their state need to move together. We took a big step towards this recently by building yoga-layout into the native binary. It exposes part of the official yoga-layout TypeScript package via FFI. Only the API surface that is actually used by OpenTUI. Covered by the test suite of the original yoga-layout package. This already gave a median speedup of ~2.5x, and up to 30x for narrow scenarios. The yoga-layout integration is useful beyond the speedup. Built-in text and editor measurement can now happen entirely in native code during layout instead of calling back into JavaScript. I ran an experiment last month taking this even further, having GPT 5.6 port yoga-layout from C++ to Zig, which gave extremely good results. It would be a burden to maintain right now though, so that's off the table for now. I might come back to it. Simon Klee is working relentlessly on Node compatibility and already has a full Node version of OpenCode running. Node got FFI support in v26.4.0, thanks to help from the Node community, namely Matteo Collina and Paolo Insogna. Behaviour and interfaces seem similar between Node and Bun, but there are some major differences. To get the best performance out of the Node FFI implementation, its usage has to follow some rules. Node has three ways to call native functions: the generic C++/libffi path, the SharedBuffer path, and the V8 Fast API. The generic path converts every argument in Node's C++ layer and then calls the function through libffi. It is flexible, but also the slowest option for frequently called functions. The SharedBuffer path is a middle ground. JavaScript writes scalar values and BigInt pointers into a small per-function buffer, reducing some conversion work. The actual native call still goes through libffi though. Typed arrays used as pointers cannot be packed into this buffer and fall back to the generic path. The path we really want is the V8 Fast API. Node generates a small machine-code trampoline for the exact function signature, allowing optimized JavaScript to call the native function without going through the generic converter or libffi. This only applies to JavaScript-to-native calls. Callbacks from native code into JavaScript still use libffi closures. Getting onto this path is quite strict. A signature can have at most eight arguments and everything must fit into CPU registers. x86-64 Unix systems have room for six GP (general-purpose) and eight FP (floating-point) arguments. AArch64 has room for seven GP and eight FP arguments. Anything that spills onto the stack falls back to a slower path. These are Node fast-path restrictions, not general FFI restrictions. Bun also does not support passing structs by value through its current FFI API. OpenTUI uses bun-ffi-structs to pack ABI-aligned struct data into an ArrayBuffer and passes a pointer instead. Despite the name, the package also works with Node. Pointers need some care too. Typed arrays and ArrayBuffers normally have to be resolved into BigInt addresses first. Eligible functions with exactly one pointer argument get another Fast API entrypoint that can extract the address directly from the buffer. An eligible signature is still not enough. V8 has to optimize a direct call with a fixed number of consistently typed arguments. Wrappers that collect arguments and forward them using spread or Reflect.apply can hide that call shape and keep the function on a slower path. The practical rules are: keep hot signatures within register limits, use direct fixed-arity calls with stable argument types, reuse owned buffers safely, and batch small operations. Then measure the real call site, because eligibility only makes a function fast-capable. We have to design the ABI around these constraints where it makes sense and gives the expected performance improvement. The third big area is text rendering. Today a Text renderable accepts a string, StyledText, or a tree of TextNodes. Before rendering, the TextNode tree is walked and flattened into styled chunks. Those chunks are packed in TypeScript, sent through FFI, copied into a native TextBuffer, and stored in a rope. Styles are represented separately as highlights. A TextBufferView then wraps the rope into visual lines, which are drawn into the visible buffer. This works, but updates are much more expensive than they should be. setStyledText effectively throws away and rebuilds the rope, copies and reparses all text and recreates the style highlights. Changing one TextNode also walks and flattens the complete tree before going through this path again. Text and style segments should instead live directly in the rope and support incremental replacement. Memory ownership is split between retained JavaScript buffers, the native memory registry, rope arenas, wrapping caches, styled-text storage, and highlights. Different operations preserve or reset different parts of that state. This is hard to reason about and can retain memory for much longer than expected. Text storage needs clearer ownership, with fewer lifetimes split across JavaScript and native code. The public API reflects the same split. The t template literal is convenient, but creates another intermediate chunk representation that is mutable, not cached, and not merged. Text also maintains both StyledText content and a special TextNode tree, which do not compose properly. TextNode is only a style scope, not a normal layout primitive, so Text renderables cannot naturally compose inside each other. I think this should become one Text primitive backed directly by rope segments. The template literal API might disappear or become a very thin helper around those native segments. Editing has another temporary layer in TypeScript. Extmarks currently monkey-patch editing operations, scan and adjust all marks after changes, maintain their own undo state, and recreate native highlights. They should become native marks anchored directly in the rope. A proper mark tree, similar to Neovim's marktree, could update marks together with edits, undo, and redo, and provide the foundation for highlights and concealment. Text wrapping has also become too complex. Supporting CJK, emoji, combining characters, ZWJ sequences, tabs, and different terminal width rules currently mixes byte offsets, grapheme indexes, and display-cell columns across several custom algorithms. Dirty views rewrap the complete document. Measurement and drawing can repeat some of the same work. The wrapping implementation needs an overhaul, but the exact shape is still open. The goal is to make Unicode handling easier to maintain, avoid repeated full-document work, and clearly separate byte offsets, graphemes, and terminal display cells. None of this will happen as one big rewrite. We will replace pieces when we understand the problem well enough and when the result is clearly simpler, faster, or more useful. To achieve all of this we might break public interfaces. Thanks to OpenCode and a lot of good models, migration to a new version with breaking changes mostly is not an issue anymore. claude playing TFT -- i ran it for two games and it improved in-context from 0 to 3/30 rounds won. it figured out "3-starring" on its own (buying pairs to upgrade units) which is a core mechanic of this game and hasnt been instructed on how to play besides asking it to "play tft and win" comparing this cua agent to OpenAI Five's result from 2017 which is a different game, model(a big LSTM), had access to Dota's API outputted a discrete action at 4.6hz this cua agent runs at 0.15hz considering it takes anywhere from 2-15 seconds to think(0.07hz without), and is just pixels in, any mouse/keyboard out... and (potentially) wasnt trained on TFT specifically but not sure despite this 2-15s seems to be fine for a turned based game like TFT but in prior videos like league/minecraft is considerably harder for a cua agent to do since by the time you take a screenshot the game state may have changed and you've wasted 7 seconds thinking, and another 7 seconds thinking about the new game state, and catastrophically failing like that. the intention here is not to play TFT or league with a bot. please dont use it as such

We’ll keep working with stakeholders in the Christian faith, collect feedback, and build tools that better support discipleship. Pewbeam is live 🎉 This was just a dream, a dream I didn’t even know was possible—but I decided to pursue it anyway. Today, that dream is now a reality. We have a desktop app (Windows and macOS—this weekend) that can do all of this and even more. Over the last six months, I’ve pushed myself and my team hard, and I’ve seen people become hopeful and genuinely blessed by this product. I’ve received strong support from pastors, church members, techies, and several media houses and reporters. It has been a great honor to spend myself on something worthwhile. We’ve built an AI-native presentation app that displays relevant scriptures on screen in under 80 ms, without needing a volunteer. We’re starting with scriptures, but we’re growing into a comprehensive presentation software, with slides launching next month. From testing Pewbeam 2.0 is live🥳 in churches over the last four weeks, pastors have been able to focus on what matters instead of juggling or micromanaging the media team while preaching.
