Mr Bean has to catch these moments of calm where he can. He has made a powerful enemy: Mwinzi has decided the warthog is his favourite target! There is ongoing drama between Kaluku's resident warthog and the unusually large, burly young bull elephant. Mwinzi isn't scared of other animals – in fact, he actively patrols his territory and delights in chasing off smaller orphans who encroach on 'his' turf. Poor Mr Bean bears the brunt of Mwinzi's bravado. Mwinzi sends him running at full tilt, tail aloft, with irate snorts and squeals echoing behind. It's all part of growing up at Kaluku, where orphans of different species navigate the complex social dynamics that will prepare them for wild life – even if that means occasional undignified retreats! Mwinzi and Natibu may be two of Ithumba's newest residents, but they're already old hat at all the routines. This is especially apparent during milk feeds, which unfold like a well orchestrated dance. After the boys finish their own bottles – Mwinzi first, Natibu second – they don't rush away. They have cottoned onto the fact that Bondeni, seen at the end, is the herd's 'slow drinker.' Never ones to miss an opportunity for free milk, they loiter behind the Keeper feeding him, just in case he might tire of inching through Bondeni's bottle and feed it to them instead. Natibu, Mwinzi, and Toto (not seen here; he's in the next feeding group) graduated from our Kaluku Nursery to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit in late April. This move marked the next chapter in their journey back to the wild – one that will continue to unfold over the coming years, as the boys gain their independence and learn from older, wiser friends. Good morning from little Wamata, peeking over her stockade half door to say hello after being tucked up in bed for the night ! Our second youngest Nairobi Nursery orphan has mastered the art of sleepy morning greetings, peering over her stable door with those gentle eyes, before heading out for the day. With your help, we are able to offer orphan elephants like Wamata a safe and secure home, until they’re ready to return to the wild when grown:

We’re counting our blessings! Wildlife conservation comes with more than its fair share of challenges, but we still begin and end every day filled with gratitude. We are thankful for our team, who work bravely and tirelessly to forge a future for Kenya’s wildlife. We’re thankful for the little miracles that unfold every day, from orphans who overcome enormous odds to matriarchs who bravely lead their families in the wild. And we’re grateful for the extraordinary ecosystems we have the privilege to help protect. Most of all, we are thankful for YOU. Your steadfast support fuels our conservation work, for 48 years and counting. You have helped us give more than 320 orphaned elephants and 20 black rhinos a second chance at life – and paved the way for the next generation. The 85 calves born to our ex-orphans (including 17 since last Thanksgiving!) are living proof of this legacy. Family is everything to elephants. It is everything to us, too. Thank you for being part of ours!

“Ghost was adopted from the shelter as a tiny puppy and now at just 2 years old he is back in the same kennel he once left. His family's life changed and after months of uncertainty he was returned to the shelter with nowhere else to go. From playful puppy to heartbroken adult, his story is one of loss and resilience. October is National Pitbull Awareness Month and Ghost reminds us why these dogs deserve a chance. Pitbulls are loyal and loving and too often misunderstood. We have now recorded 92 known grandcalves – wild-born babies whose mothers came to us as orphans, some barely able to stand when they arrived. They grew up. They went wild. They started families. Imp, filmed here, is the youngest.
