Grozev: Grigory Rodchenkov ran Moscow’s anti-doping lab and helped build Russia’s Sochi doping scheme. Athletes took banned drugs. The FSB swapped dirty urine for clean samples through a hole in the wall of the testing center. Rodchenkov fled Russia in 2015 and exposed it. 2/

Grozev: Russia tried to blame Rodchenkov even after he fled. In 2019, investigators found that someone had deleted raw data from the Moscow lab and planted fake messages to make Rodchenkov look responsible for the doping scheme. 3/

Grozev: Dmitry Kovalev, an FSB colonel working as a forensic expert for Russia’s anti-doping agency, defended Russia in the international doping case. He said the lab data had not been manipulated and tried to blame Rodchenkov. 4/

Grozev: After Rodchenkov exposed the scheme, the FSB moved Russia’s doping program to the secret Signal Institute. Top officials approved the move and gave Signal unlimited funding. 5/

Grozev: Signal already housed Russia’s secret chemical weapons program. The same institute worked on the Novichok poisoning of Alexei Navalny. Now it also housed Russia’s new doping program. 6/

Grozev: Kovalev’s FSB boss was Major General Vladimir Bogdanov. Bogdanov ran the FSB operation around Navalny. In July 2020, while Russia prepared its doping defense, Kovalev called him six times. A month later, the FSB squad poisoned Navalny. 7/

Grozev: The calls continued during the assassination operation. Bogdanov stayed in constant contact with the poisoning squad before and after they used the poison. Kovalev kept calling him months before appearing in court as Russia’s doping expert. 8/

Grozev: Viktor Tarachenko ran the Signal Institute. He specialized in chemical weapons and had already been linked to the Salisbury Novichok attack. His phone records show him talking to scientists refining nerve agents while he also oversaw anabolic steroid production. 9/

Grozev: The doping and poisoning programs followed the same system. Signal scientists developed the substances. FSB officers inside the relevant institutions handled the operations. Kovalev belonged to the same FSB directorate. 10/

Grozev: Kovalev was in constant contact with senior figures across Russian sport. He spoke with the national snowboarding coach, CSKA swimming and basketball officials, the volleyball federation president and a European championship medalist. 11/

Grozev: Kovalev also traveled to the Winter Olympics in South Korea and China with another FSB officer, Andrey Fedorov. One contact list saved Fedorov as “Andrey Doping 8th department.” 12/

Grozev: Kovalev openly idolized Putin. After Nurmagomedov beat McGregor in 2018, he wrote that McGregor being killed in the ring would have been a “magnificent birthday present for Putin.” 13X
