Insurance is the biggest aspect of personal finance that the vast majority of Indians struggle with. One big reason is a lack of awareness about insurance, rampant misselling complexity, spam, etc. Health insurance and life insurance (term insurance) are the only two products most people need. But the products that are sold the most are ULIPs and other traditional products that promise both insurance and investments but offer the worst of both worlds, not to mention the ridiculous commissions. To make insurance simple for you, we recently hosted an AMA with Shrehith Karkera, co-founder of Ditto Insurance. The results over the last 3 years: Revenue nearly tripled. Gross profit up 10x. Added over a million customers. Headcount? LOWER than when they started. He said something wild: "I think we 10x our business and we don't have a big change in our cost structure. We 10x it again and still don't." Friedberg: California Created an Insurance Crisis by Artificially Inflating Home Prices david friedberg broke it down on episode 210: -- the frequency of loss is INCREASING for homes in climate-sensitive zones (areas with wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.) -- this includes parts of los angeles susceptible to wildfires -- in a free market, the cost of insurance would rise with the increased risk of loss -- however, california makes it nearly impossible for home insurance providers to increase rates -- this artificially inflates home prices, due to the massively subsidized insurance costs " They're driving real estate value up because they're not allowing the cost of insurance of that real estate to naturally float." " And so by driving real estate values up, the economy looks good, they make property taxes, income comes in." -- but, major insurance providers like state farm pulled out of certain at-risk areas in the state -- for example, state farm canceled ~1600 policies in pacific palisades last summer -- californians living in at-risk areas are now relying on the state's insurance program (the "fair plan") in record numbers -- according to friedberg, the fair plan has ~$220M of capital with ~$5B of reinsurance -- after this string of wildfires, the program has ~$6B of exposure in the pacific palisades alone, and could have $24B+ in total losses -- so, california's state insurance plan is effectively bankrupt, and will need a bailout " At the end of the day, the bill is going to come due." The most blatant flip flop I’ve ever seen. Abdul El-Sayed today on Medicare for All: "If you would like to have a private insurer, you’re welcome to do that." This man has spent YEARS vowing the exact opposite. Here are 11 times Abdul promised to ELIMINATE private health insurance plans: 08/04/2018: “Instead of having multiple insurance companies... what you have is the state operating as your insurance company. That's what we want.” 11/18/2019: "Medicare for All guarantees you a public health care plan and eliminates your private one." 11/18/2019: "Under Medicare-for-All, the federal government is the only payer—hence single payer—for healthcare to everybody in the nation." 06/04/2020: "What does Medicare for All do? Medicare for All comes in and says, ‘No more of this insurance industry,’ which costs us far more, whose CEOs make tens of millions of dollars a year, and which creates redundancy in the healthcare system that increases the overall cost for all of us." 07/12/2020: “My issue with private health insurance is that I see it as fundamentally a middleman that we've allowed to persist and exist in our healthcare system for no added value except that a lot of people profit off of it... the best way to do that is cut out the middleman.” 09/29/2020: "The only insurer in town is Medicare" 12/16/2020: “What Medicare for All does is it does away with the private insurance market. I’m fighting every day to take care of patients at @redbudsurgerycenter and work with insurance. We’re doing complex DIEP flap reconstruction safely in an outpatient setting with incredible outcomes. When I’m not in-network yet, we use a gap exception → insurance agrees to cover the surgery at in-network rates. For one patient, we got the approval. Everything documented. We took her to surgery… and while we were in the operating room, they sent an email reversing the coverage in real time. We still took care of her, of course. But how is this allowed? How can doctors keep their doors open when billion-dollar companies can change the rules after the work is done?

This woman is a Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician in America She says she’s seeing more and more doctors leave practicing medicine because what US Health Insurance companies are doing to healthcare She explains why, this is important information: “I believe what we are seeing with healthcare professionals is not just burnout, it's something far more insidious and painful. This is moral injury. — Moral injury. The pain of knowing what the right thing is for the patient, but being unable to do that because of systemic barriers. And over time, this wears you down. I have seen so many people leave the profession because it has eroded their sense of purpose, their love for the job. And we take a Hippocratic oath to do no harm. But in a system that doesn't place human health at the center, that becomes harder and harder to uphold. And that disconnect from what we are trained to do, from what we can actually do, creates a very painful wound. And when the healers themselves are wounded, when their hands are tied, when their clinical judgment is overruled, they don't just feel that defeat themselves, they that trickles down to the patient. — So when we see our providers juggling insurance company protocols, productivity metrics, hospital bureaucracy, the relentless pull of the electronic medical record, all of these things take the doctor away, the patient. If we really want to understand why the United States spends more on health care than any other nation, while delivering some of the worst outcomes, we need to start being honest. The system just isn't inefficient.
