Now, this is an interesting one. After years of Lactate testing and 6MRT time trials under Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, respectively, Andoni Iraola is doing things differently during pre-season testing at Liverpool. Normally, most clubs use tests like the Yo-Yo, a 1600m continuous run, the 2K Test, a 1K Test, a Bronco or something similar - but we've not seen this one used before, ever. Essentially, it's 4 x 30sec interval runs combined, with shuttle runs included at the start of each interval, followed by a longer "aerobic" based run. The objective doesn't seem to be to measure the players' MAS or VO2max. But within the exercise, the coaches are testing the players' aerobic power, agility, change of direction, running economy, and recovery from repeated changes in pace. We know Iraola likes to play a high intensity, highly transitional style of football, so a test like this does feel in line with his aerobic demands. Within the training edit posted by Liverpool, heart rate is mentioned a couple of times, so it does stand to reason that they are trying to gauge max heart rate and heart rate variability within the test. Our GPS tech, combined with the heart rate monitors, is being used to monitor the players’ external load, and how they’re responding to it internally. Either way, it's an interesting concept seemingly predicated upon age-old interval running exercises.

Mauricio Pochettino's use of the Gacon Test in pre-season gets dropped regularly by ex players of his. Kyle Walker says in this clip that Dele Alli was the only player who could complete the test in his time at Tottenham. Basically, it's an intermittent shuttle run with the distance increasing at each stage, but the time to complete staying the same (45 seconds). We've included an explainer in the post. A full completion is 5000m in total which is all 25 stages.

Interesting to see New York City FC take on the Norwegian 4x4 - a protocol designed to test and improve aerobic capacity and VO₂ max in elite athletes. - 4 x 4 minutes of high intensity interval runs - 3 min active recovery between the 4 runs. Normally, protocol measurement would be that each player must sustain 85–95% HRmax. Monitored in real time via HRM and our Sonra Live iPad.
