⚠️Fully committed approach‼️ It’s common in mountain flying to have to commit to a landing much further away from the airstrip than in open ground. This is due to the rising terrain surrounding some airstrips that you cannot out climb and so you must make the landing 👊🏻

☁️ Airstrip in the clouds 😶‍🌫️ Ridgetop airstrips are often shrouded in clouds. Provided you can see enough of it to land on and have a suitable escape plan (right turn into the valley in this case), it’s no problem to make an approach and land.

⛔️Dropping into the point of no return⚠️ Many airstrips in Papua are like this where you fly into a small bowl, surrounded by terrain the aircraft cannot out climb. From here on in, you MUST land. A go-around will only result into a crash into terrain 💥

Wait for the end to see how steep this landing was 😎 Uphill landings are commonplace in Papua and require specialist piloting skills to master. Once you have the hang of it though, they’re easier and safer than landing on the flat, slippery airstrips of the flatlands 🌴

☁️ Punching through the clouds for a ridge top landing 👊🏻 Airstrips situated on high terrain can often be hidden by clouds. If they’re thin enough to see through, you can punch through them for a safe landing.

I'd never landed at this field before, there's a lot of terrain covered in trees and I misjudged my base leg putting me much higher than normal. So, time to slip this in, flying with full right rudder and left roll to make the plane extra draggy for landing.

Crash Sequence: •Dense fog over the Pune–Baramati area, visibility extremely low. •Baramati airstrip is small and does not have ILS (Instrument Landing System) facilities. •The pilot had to attempt a manual and visual landing. •The aircraft did not approach the runway directly but made a large turn. •This indicated that the first landing attempt was aborted. •Aligning with the runway in the fog proved difficult. •A second landing attempt was made. •During this, the pilot issued a MAYDAY call. •According to DGCA sources, it is a table-top runway. •During landing, the aircraft crashed near the edge of the runway. •Balance was lost at approximately 100 feet altitude. •The plane hit the ground before reaching the runway. •On impact, a major explosion occurred, followed by several smaller blasts. •A severe fire broke out on the aircraft. •Due to the fire, immediate rescue was not possible. •Investigation into the crash is ongoing; the final cause will be confirmed in the DGCA report.

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one… if they can use the aircraft again, that’s a bonus. Thankfully both pilots in this forced landing in Australia have made it out ok. Good work fellas… the aircraft is replaceable.

Watching Great Blue Herons glide in for a landing is always magical. In this instance the water reflections on the underside of the bird's wings just adds to the magic and gives the entire landing approach an otherworldly look and feel. Talk about a perfect landing. This bird nailed it!
