He could have ejected immediately. He didn’t. On May 14, 2009, RAF Harrier GR9A ZG478 crashed during landing at Kandahar. The approach was too steep and the jet struck the runway hard. Its landing gear collapsed, sending the Harrier into a 4,000-foot belly slide as its fuel, weapons and pods caught fire. But the pilot stayed with the burning aircraft. Why? Four aircraft were waiting on the runway. He steered the crippled Harrier away from them before ejecting as flames reached the cockpit. He survived with minor injuries. The Harrier was destroyed. No enemy fire brought it down. This was a landing accident that became a fight to keep a burning aircraft from taking others with it. Watch the final seconds. The decision to stay in the cockpit is what makes this footage extraordinary.

An E145 Jet made a bad landing yesterday which lead to the destruction of the plane, everyone got off safely, but a passenger posted video showing the landing and evacuation. Must take some resolve to just keep recording as the plane is scraping along the runway on fire. Looks like the plane touched down short of the runway, a situation that was likely incompatible with keeping the landing gear attached.

That was a spectacular emergency landing while dragging the wing on the Runway surface before coming to a rest. On Wednesday, a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air aircraft (N3PX) made an emergency landing at the Conroe North Houston Regional Airport after experiencing a landing gear failure. He made an approach from runway 29, and then he carried out a missed approach, after which he again tried to make an attempt from runway 11. I also have no contact with the pilots; they are not there. It is a very unfortunate decision. We are very sad about it. We are trying to first be with the families who have lost their next of kin. It is a very unfortunate incident. Primarily, it appears that the pilot could not see the runway...He was a very experienced pilot, more than 16,000 hours of experience. The co-pilot also had 1500 hours of experience. The Captain was very experienced. He was with Sahara, JetLite, Jet Airways and he was very experienced on this type of aeroplane also...The aircraft was very well-maintained. A Frontier Airlines flight bound for LAX hit a person on the runway during takeoff from Denver International Airport on Friday. The Airbus A321 was taking off from runway 17L when it appeared to strike an individual walking on the runway. The pilot quickly aborted the takeoff. Passengers were evacuated on the runway and are being bused back to the terminal. Fire crews were dispatched to the aircraft to extinguish the engine fire. Authorities have not yet released additional information about the person on the runway or the circumstances that led to the incident.

NTSB investigators have given an update on the deadly plane crash that claimed the life of NASCAR star Greg Biffle and six other people, including his children, on Thursday morning. At Saturday’s press conference, officials confirmed that they still do not know the cause of the crash. “We do not know the circumstances which led the aircraft… to attempt to return to the airport, but that is the focus of our investigation,” officials said. They also confirmed that a text reading “Emergency landing” was sent from someone on the plane. “I can confirm that the NTSB is aware of one brief text from a passenger on board the aircraft to a family member that read, and I quote, ‘Emergency landing.'” “We are not aware of any other communications from passengers on board the aircraft to those on the ground.” The NTSB also says that at this time, it does not know who the pilot of the plane was.

Jet left the runway on landing at Mesquite, lost its undercarriage, and was destroyed in a fire. The aircraft was on a ferry flight, and it was not intended to land at Mesquite: the pilot was later arrested on suspicion of flying while drunk (later confirmed) (Below is an exact quote of the accident report: I can imagine that when this came out, the pilot was busy printing CVs) “After authorities arrived on site, the pilot was arrested for operating an aircraft under the influence of alcohol. The pilot was found to have a blood alcohol level of .288, which exceeded the FAA's allowable limit of .040. Remember the C-130 crash in Colombia a month ago and killed 24 and left 43 injured? News reports indicated the pilots were arrested after the preliminary report came out. Given the outcome, the preliminary report pointed to pilot actions, along with runway conditions and weather, underlining there were no mechanical issues with the aircraft. Key findings from the investigation include: No mechanical failures contributed to the accident. The aircraft departed Viru Viru bound for El Alto. Weather conditions at the destination deteriorated en route, with storms and hail reported, but the crew received no weather updates. On arrival at El Alto, the crew was cleared to land on runway 10. Due to convective activity on that runway, they opted to approach runway 28 instead. Runway 28 is located at 13,300 ft elevation, measures 4,000 m in length, and has a negative gradient of 1.55%. METAR data indicated winds between 050°/10 kt and 360°/08 kt. According to the Investigators, the approach was conducted above the glide slope and at excessive speed. The aircraft touched down on the nose gear only, approximately 1,200 m beyond the threshold. Without compression of the main landing gear struts, the brakes and thrust reversers remained unavailable. Once the main gear touched down, the aircraft entered a section of runway contaminated by hail and slush, resulting in hydroplaning in the final third of the runway, an overrun, and the accident.
