True. I’m looking into installing a bunch of other services on it too and also trying to cluster a few of them together. It’s like a Pi for $25 that also comes with a bunch of sensors and a screen.

1.18 is nostalgic to me. I think there is some cutoff though around >1.20 where it requires Java jdk 21 which is more difficult to install than Java jdk 17.

Exactly! Install termux which is a terminal emulator application with a full shell built-in. Then install java openjdk 17 inside of termux. Then download the Paper minecraft server .jar file and run it!

That’s pretty cool, I’ve kept all my old iPhones to eventually do just this for more processing!

The problem is with running them 24/7. You can't turn them on without a battery in them even if permanently plugged into the wall, and it will begin to bloat if you do. Ask me how I know.

Imagine running Docker on Android. But I know Docker needs certain stuff within the Linux kernel and Android is based on Linux kernel but heavily modified so it may not work. But then, nice job running a Minecraft server inside Termux.

There’s a project called proot-docker which apparently allows some docker containers to work on android termux, I’ll be testing that out soon to see what the limits are.

Userland is pretty cool stuff! Mostly I use yt-dlp and ffmpeg to turn anything into a podcast. If it wasn't for cheap VPS I'd probably move everything over to a mid range phone, 8gb or 12gb is good enough these days for LAMP

Why not? For 95% of all people, a current smartphone has enough power to do all the work. Just switched my x86_64 home-server for a arm64 device. Plenty of power for everything...

I ran a torrent seedbox and an emby server off of a moto G play phone with a 512gb micro SD card for storage and left it at the local college on their wifi. 👍🏼

There's been an app called Cuberite on F-droid that lets you do this in one tap for over two years, it's outdated and termux is almost certainly better for processing overheads but this is nothing new.

Instead of docker you can run podman without root access, but i think you can't install it without root access, if you can figure out the installation part then you don't need docker.
