Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece in psychological horror and poignant storytelling. I actually managed to secure a copy of the Greatest Hits edition a few years back. It's one of the most sought-after games in my collection. That said, I think the remake is just as good, and I don't say that lightly. It actually managed to recapture the magic of the original, which I honestly didn't think was possible. The atmosphere, visuals, and sound design were masterfully recreated. I don't get where all the recent hate is coming from. Everyone was praising the game when it came out. Is it just cool to shit on remakes, regardless of their quality?

In terms of graphics, yes, SH2 mogs SH2R. Realistic graphics were impossible back then, so highly stylized graphics were the only option. SH2R doesn't really have a style, it's just "what would SH2 look like if it was real". Not bad, but it's not really scary either. What made SH2 scary were the graphics and the false sense of claustrophobia given to you by camera angles. In terms of gameplay, they both suck. SH2 is mostly just endless marathon running while you dodge enemies in hallways that only seem tight due to camera angles. SH2R is generic 3rd person survival horror trying to ape the success of RE2R.

The originals are always gonna look incredible and unique to me but I can’t hate on the SH2 remake. But they really did peak with SH3 in my opinion. And then for some reason SH4 feels too “lively” for me which is funny because it scares the shit out of me.

It sold 6m yet people stopped talking about it after few weeks. You can tell it's a lame by-the-book remake that has no lasting value. Compare with RE4 remake, people still mod and play it.

It's a funnier videogame though.
