New Google Gemma 4 12B claims near-26B performance - we tested both! We ran both models locally on one RTX 4090 and gave each the same task: write a self-contained HTML5 canvas animation with real physics in one file without libraries. Three scenes - a Galton board, two blocks colliding off a wall, and a chaotic triple pendulum Outputs: Gemma 4 26B-A4B: 15 GB VRAM usage, 6.9k tokens, 138 tok/s Gemma 4 12B: 9 GB VRAM usage, 8.9k tokens, 80 tok/s Same Gemma 4 family, but the 26B-A4B won every scene and ran ~1.7x faster - on just 4B active params. The 12B stayed very close though, on almost half the VRAM - which makes it the ideal model for a 16 GB laptop

Gemma 4 on Apple Silicon Two awesome releases by our partner Google DeepMind & Google Gemma : > Gemma 4 12B — their new dense, unified multimodal model. It uses an encoder free audio path and simplified vision encoder. > Gemma 4 QAT — quantization-aware training checkpoints, optimized to run locally on consumer GPUs and edge devices, compressing the model while preserving the quality you expect from Gemma 4. On the audio 🎧 side we added support for 15+ new TTS, ASR & VAD models, faster long-form transcription, and an expanded OpenAI-compatible audio server. All local on Apple Silicon. Tracking Anything with Decoupled Video Segmentation paper page: Training data for video segmentation are expensive to annotate. This impedes extensions of end-to-end algorithms to new video segmentation tasks, especially in large-vocabulary settings. To 'track anything' without training on video data for every individual task, we develop a decoupled video segmentation approach (DEVA), composed of task-specific image-level segmentation and class/task-agnostic bi-directional temporal propagation. Due to this design, we only need an image-level model for the target task (which is cheaper to train) and a universal temporal propagation model which is trained once and generalizes across tasks. To effectively combine these two modules, we use bi-directional propagation for (semi-)online fusion of segmentation hypotheses from different frames to generate a coherent segmentation. We show that this decoupled formulation compares favorably to end-to-end approaches in several data-scarce tasks including large-vocabulary video panoptic segmentation, open-world video segmentation, referring video segmentation, and unsupervised video object segmentation.

Google presents AudioPaLM: A Large Language Model That Can Speak and Listen paper page: introduce AudioPaLM, a large language model for speech understanding and generation. AudioPaLM fuses text-based and speech-based language models, PaLM-2 [Anil et al., 2023] and AudioLM [Borsos et al., 2022], into a unified multimodal architecture that can process and generate text and speech with applications including speech recognition and speech-to-speech translation. AudioPaLM inherits the capability to preserve paralinguistic information such as speaker identity and intonation from AudioLM and the linguistic knowledge present only in text large language models such as PaLM-2. We demonstrate that initializing AudioPaLM with the weights of a text-only large language model improves speech processing, successfully leveraging the larger quantity of text training data used in pretraining to assist with the speech tasks. The resulting model significantly outperforms existing systems for speech translation tasks and has the ability to perform zero-shot speech-to-text translation for many languages for which input/target language combinations were not seen in training. AudioPaLM also demonstrates features of audio language models, such as transferring a voice across languages based on a short spoken prompt.

Instead of relying solely on voice activity detection (VAD), which only considers when a user is speaking, our model also considers what has and is being said in the context of a conversation and predicts when a user is finished expressing their thoughts before the agent responds.
