Generations of Columbia students, alumni, and community members protested outside of today’s commencement, burning their diplomas in an act of defiance. Protestors remained valiant in the face of the NYPD’s SRG unit, who arrested two individuals at the demonstration.

Columbia University called in NYPD University says most of protesters on campus are Not students Part of Columbia’s latest statement: “Due to the number of individuals participating in the disruption inside and outside of the building, a large group of people attempting to force their way into Butler Library creating a safety hazard, and what we believe to be the significant presence of individuals not affiliated with the University, Columbia has taken the necessary step of requesting the presence of NYPD to assist in securing the building and the safety of our community.”

The act of recording and documenting the incident has also played a significant role in difusing the situation.
