The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has highlighted the Tinubu administration's ongoing transformation of Nigeria's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, revealing that the Federal Government has invested nearly ₦100 billion over the past two years to strengthen the TVET ecosystem. He disclosed that over 250,000 students are currently undergoing training across approximately 1,600 TVET centres nationwide. According to him, beneficiaries receive monthly stipends ranging from ₦25,000 to ₦30,000, while participating training centres receive between ₦45,000 and ₦50,000 per student to support programme delivery. He noted that trainees are being equipped with industry-relevant skills, linked to employment opportunities upon graduation, and provided with startup packs worth up to ₦1 million to promote entrepreneurship, job creation, and self-reliance.

At today’s Ministerial Statement at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, I delivered a clear message: Africa stands at a defining moment. With a population of over 1.4 billion projected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050 and nearly 70% of its people under the age of 30, our continent holds immense potential. Yet each year, approximately 12 million young Africans enter the labor market, while only about 3 million formal jobs are created. This gap is not merely an economic concern, but a pressing development and stability challenge. I shared that Uganda’s experience demonstrates a critical lesson real transformation requires coordinated and deliberate action that connects young people to economic systems and enables a shift from subsistence livelihoods to meaningful participation in the money economy. Uganda has taken practical steps to address this challenge. Through initiatives such as the Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP) and the Parish Development Model (PDM), Government is extending financial support and bringing services closer to communities to stimulate grassroots economic participation. The Emyooga Programme has further strengthened access to affordable finance by organizing citizens into savings and enterprise groups, many of them youth led. In addition, investments in skilling through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as well as digital innovation hubs, are equipping young people with competencies relevant to today’s evolving economy. I emphasized three key priorities. First, investing in future-ready skills, including digital, green, and entrepreneurial capabilities. Second, unlocking financing for youth led enterprises, leveraging frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Third, ensuring young people are engaged as co creators in policymaking, not merely beneficiaries. Africa’s transformation must be integrated, youth centered, and driven by strong partnerships. This is what America and China are doing — building armies of skilled individuals. For Nigeria to compete with these great nations, we must take a page from their playbook. Scott Adams once said, “Every skill you acquire doubles your odds of success.” This is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and our Federal Ministry of Education strategy. That’s why we are aggressively reviving our technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system. We aim to equip young men and women with “life skills” that will enable them to be productive members of their communities, while also improving their employability and career opportunities. TVET is one of the cornerstones of our 6-point agenda to reform our education system. We will be creating opportunities for our young Nigerians both men and women to give them life skills to improve their employability irrespective of their level of education — from basic education to tertiary institutions. A skilled workforce is key to President Tinubu’s vision for the nation. We will also be adding to our TVET curriculum life skills in Renewable Energy (Solar), compressed natural gas (CNG) and mechanised farming to also support PBAT’s agenda of ensuring food security in our country. We are working to build a better nation for the next generation.
