Australia has already started the demolition of coal fired power stations. But why? Such assets should be mothballed or kept for a rainy day.

I agree with the operational point: shutting working baseload before a firm replacement existed was a sequencing failure. The UAE took the opposite path, Barakah nuclear plus utility-scale solar, phased under stable policy.
