Remember when Bill Gates said electric semi trucks would “probably never be a practical solution”? “The problem is that batteries are big and heavy. The more weight you’re trying to move, the more batteries you need to power the vehicle. But the more batteries you use, the more weight you add, and the more power you need. Even with big breakthroughs in battery technology, electric vehicles will probably never be a practical solution for things like 18-wheelers, cargo ships, and passenger jets. Electricity works when you need to cover short distances, but we need a different solution for heavy, long-haul vehicles.” Well… volume production of the Tesla Semi is beginning in 2026 with a target of 50,000 units per year.

Today I saw a semi-truck completely flipped over. I bet a Tesla Semi won’t have this problem… No vehicle can eliminate every crash, and physics always wins. But this is exactly why I believe electric trucks equipped with technologies like FSD are the future. Every year, around 500,000 crashes in the U.S. involve large trucks. More than 5,000 people lose their lives, and over 160,000 are injured. Rollover crashes are especially dangerous for truck drivers because of the massive weight, high center of gravity, and the forces involved. Tesla designed the Semi with safety as the priority from day one. It has a low center of gravity bc the battery pack sits beneath the cab, helping improve stability. It also includes advanced cameras, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warnings, and other driver-assistance features that can help reduce the chances of serious crashes. Technology won’t prevent every single accident, but if we can use better engineering and smarter software to reduce even a small percentage of these crashes, that will save thousands of lives over time. I can’t wait for the day when seeing a flipped-over semi becomes much rarer than it is today bc of the Tesla Semi.
