One last stop in #bali to surprise a community that was in need of a new school with the BIG news that Lance Breitstein 🇺🇸🌎 has donated a new school for them and construction will begin this month and will be finished in a few months! Until now, these kids have sadly not had a place to learn, they just used some extra space in the community center which has been FAR from ideal -- thanks to Lance's generosity, they'll soon have their own school to learn in later this year! We are coming up to the one year anniversary of The Sameer Project. A couple of months into the project we saw a great need for a camp ( ) for internally displaced people that needed additional support because of critical medical cases. Injuries, diseases, chronic conditions, mental and physical disabilities that needed rehabilitation, and more. We had to do something to serve them with dignity and care. But what started as The Refaat Alareer Camp for vulnerable medical cases, quickly turned into a group of people that will forever be our family. From the ground team including the managers, security staff, cleaning crew, teachers, and doctors, to our residents, some who have migrated back to the north, and the babies that were born there…we will always be connected. The Refaat Alareer Camp became a place for refuge, hope, protection. Our camp manger even jumped in front of children playing when a quadcopter started shooting at them, he carried our wheelchair bound elders as the residents of the camp ran for their lives, and most recently organized another emergency evacuation within hours when the occupation threatened. This is what it means to be Palestinian. Community, care, honor, and we could not possibly be any luckier than to work with a team that encompasses all these traits and more. Over the last 20 years, there has been a push in youth sports to spend any and all available practice time on developing specific sport skills at the expense of developing all-around athleticism. You would think that, with all this specialized practice in one sport, we would be seeing a generation of superstars. In fact, it’s just the opposite: Injury and burnout rates are at an all-time high. I have seen young athletes as young as 8-9 years old competing at a regional and national level for their perspective sports, and yet they cant do basic things like : 1. Balance on one leg 2. Complete an honest pushup 3. Never learned to fall correctly. Amazingly these skills don't require special training. Proper general movement training can go a long way toward helping improve overall athleticism. Movement sessions for children should be fun, engaging, challenging, and most importantly, semi-organized. Between school and sports, children spend their entire day in an organized setting being constantly told what to do. A good training program will let young athletes develop their own style of movement to be able to solve movement problems in their own unique way.
