NLC starts work on Dedicated Freight Corridor & Multimodal Logistics Park, Pipri 🇵🇰 Due to absence of rail-based freight transportation system at Karachi Port, congestion of containers has become a routine problem resulting in slow cargo movement & negative impact on economic activities. Heavy road traffic has also led to increased environmental pollution & damage to road infrastructure. The construction of Dedicated Freight Corridor and Multimodal Logistics Park at Pipri offers a long-term solution to these challenges. Ground breaking ceremony of Dedicated Freight Corridor was held with Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi and Group Chairman and CEO DP World, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem attending as chief guests. NLC will complete the project in multiple phases with USD 400 million Foreign Direct Investment. The first phase is scheduled for completion within four months. The project includes rehabilitation of a 52-kilometer railway corridor from Karachi Port to Pipri Marshalling Yard along with development of a modern Multimodal Logistics Park. It is aligned with the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Pakistan Railways’ ML-1 Project. Upon completion, import containers will be transported directly by rail from Karachi Port to Pipri and onward to destinations across Pakistan, China, Central Asia and other regional countries. The project is expected to significantly reduce container congestion at Karachi Port, streamline cargo movement, accelerate economic activity and bring marked improvements in traffic management and environmental conditions.

I visited the Jaway Wharf community with the Board Members of Ghana Maritime Authority to gain first-hand insight into current marine transport activities. As a border town, most movement in the area is done by boats. We engaged community members on the importance of safety in their daily operations. We also held discussions with the Ghana Navy and Ghana Immigration Service, who shared some of the challenges they face. With a Ghana Maritime Authority office set to be established soon, the safety needs of the community will be better addressed through the provision of logistics and public education to ensure smooth and secure operations. #jomoromp #deputytransportministry #JomoroAnyelazo

JUST IN: Tanzania has officially integrated the Port of Dar es Salaam with the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network, directly linking the port to the inland logistics hubs of Nala Dry Port in Dodoma and Kwala Dry Port in the Coast Region. The new connection is expected to accelerate cargo movement by up to 80% compared to transit timelines currently experienced across competing regional trade corridors. The country’s long-term logistics strategy aims to position Dar es Salaam as the fastest and most efficient maritime gateway in East and Central Africa. By 2028, the SGR line is expected to extend to Isaka Dry Port in Shinyanga, while full rail connectivity to the borders of Rwanda and Burundi is targeted by 2030. Once completed, Tanzania intends for transit cargo moving through Dar Port to reach destinations across the East African Community (EAC) corridor in less than 48 hours. The transformation follows more than $1 Billion in modernization and expansion investments at Dar es Salaam Port led by DP World. As a result, annual cargo throughput capacity has now increased from a minimum of 27.7 million tonnes toward a projected 50 million tonnes.
