Leeds man jailed 14 years for fatal crash near Swillington Common A driver caught speeding 30mph over the limit has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for causing the death of 18-year-old Georgia Bendelow. Thomas Sherwood, 36, of Cross Gates, was driving a white BMW M3 at an average of 80mph on the 50mph A63 Selby Road when it collided with a red Seat Mii on 31 August 2022. Georgia, a passenger, died two days later in hospital. Her mum and boyfriend were also seriously injured. Sherwood was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving uninsured. He was disqualified from driving for 14 years and four months. Georgia’s family said nothing can bring her back, describing the overwhelming silence left behind.

The student from Mitcham, south London, was in her second year studying physics and philosophy with hopes of being an engineer, and was described by her mother, Samira Shafi, as 'the most amazing daughter'. The van driver - who had never driven an electric vehicle before - rammed into an iron gate, mounted a flower bed and briefly flew in the air before colliding with Ms Mahomed. Fellow students Irem Yoldas, 28, and Yamin Belmessous, 24, were injured in the crash.
