64's soundtrack is one of the best on the system, but it's easily outdone by Bomberman Hero. While I like the gameplay, it feels a bit too much like a typical 3D platformer compared to 64's tricky puzzles. It's definitely fun to play and the music keeps the vibes up #RetroGaming

That little Black Tiger update I was talking about - here are some clips of it. Forgot I needed to do the boss music so I did a quick pass at it tonight too. Boss is working but needs some kinks worked out (and it needs to end the level when it dies). A few other things here and there but pass one is completed. I need to set the traps in this level (and chests I think) to spawn the fire man enemy type. Random wasn't doing a good job of giving me traps so I'll have to adjust it a bit. Jumping on poles is still completely wrong. It should be a shorter wide jump instead of a regular jump and pressing up and jump at the top of a pole should be a big jump up. I'll get to it. Haven't even had time to test it on real hardware this weekend. Later in the week maybe. SEGA SEGA SEGA SEGA. Now back to unity for the rest of the week :) I should have been a pole dancer... oh well, too late. - Daddy <3

Donkey Kong Land isn't just a port of the SNES version, although that would be kind of awesome on the Game Boy. While the opening stage is Jungle Japes Lite, the rest of the game is pretty original. It even features new worlds like Big Ape City, a nod to DK's construction roots. It's also novel to see the Big Guy himself platforming on a ship with Gangplank Galleon playing. The 8-bit version of the tune is awesome for what it is. I keep waiting for the beat to drop, but it stays energetic and adventurous. #RetroGaming

So, who here is old enough to remember this classic which turns 40 this year? Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a 1986 Sega Master System platformer. On planet Aries, you play as Alex Kidd, descend Mt. Eternal, and learn that the evil Janken the Great has conquered Radaxian, kidnapped Prince Egle (Alex's brother), and Princess Lora. And there you have it, your typical 80s hero story :) As the lost prince and son of King Thunder, you jump, punch, and quest through various stages, fight monsters and bosses, and take on Janken's henchmen (Rockhead, Paperhead, Scissorhead) in rock-paper-scissors duels. It's a typical platformer, and while not as good as Mario Bros., I always felt Alex Kidd gets a bit too lost in the shuffle of 80s platformers. Sega dropped Alex as their mascot in favor of Sonic years later - probably a wise choice in hindsight.

Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Later 3D arcade games moved to 31kHz (640×480) resolution. Sega NAOMI games are one of the best-known examples. That’s why you need to be careful when buying an arcade cabinet. Early cabinets only supported 15kHz, while the commonly seen Astro City supported both 15kHz and 24kHz.
