Stadium Cross (Sega, 1992) Stadium Cross is the 1992 Sega motocross racer developed by AM1 that brought dirt-bike action to arcades with a clever control scheme and aggressive multiplayer focus. Running on the Sega System Multi 32 hardware, the game lets players lean their bikes left and right for realistic cornering while pushing the handlebars forward or pulling back to control speed, wheelies, and massive jumps across stadium-style dirt tracks filled with whoops, ramps, and tight turns. Up to eight players could link cabinets for chaotic races where the real thrill came from “bike battling”. SUPER HANG-ON (Sega, 1987). Hang-On's sequel and another Yu Suzuki masterpiece. The smoothest/fastest classic motorcycle arcade racer available IMHO, only matched years later by Road Rash on 3DO/PS1/Saturn. It's very playable on emulation due to mouse (analog) support, which resembles one of the control methods on the Amiga version (the game received a number of home versions which were usually competently made).

I really love racing games, especially the early 3D racing games that first appeared in the ’90s — like Daytona USA, Ridge Racer, Scud Race, and Sega Rally. The Sega Rally I’m talking about today feels completely different from on-road racing games. I really love the sliding physics. Predicting the course and starting your drift in advance feels amazing. The PC version was based on the Saturn version of Sega Rally, but the original arcade version is still the coolest. Have you played this game?

RABBIT was developed by Aorn and published by Electronic Arts Victor in 1997. An interesting fighting game with fun and neat character designs, and originally an arcade release that was only ported to the Sega Saturn. The zoom feature can be disabled after the game is beaten.

Asterix for the Sega Master System is a high-quality 8-bit platformer released in 1991 by Sega. With good graphics, responsive controls and distinct character mechanics (you start with Asterix then change to Obelix later, etc.), it's another late gem for the system that was positively received. Released in Japan, Europe and Brazil, it was unsurprisingly omitted from the North American market (probably because the comic book isn't popular there).

Using a $5 Paw Patrol toy I found at an op-shop/thrift store to play the arcade classic Super Hang-On. It uses a Raspberry Pi-Zero and you easily revert it back to the original toy (with an additional hole where the USB cable went).😁 #arcade #retrogaming #SEGA #gaming

This was the same resolution commonly used by CRT TVs and many 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit home consoles. Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Later 3D arcade games moved to 31kHz (640×480) resolution. Sega NAOMI games are one of the best-known examples. That’s why you need to be careful when buying an arcade cabinet. Early cabinets only supported 15kHz, while the commonly seen Astro City supported both 15kHz and 24kHz. Later cabinets like Blast City, Net City, and New Net City were known as “3-mode” cabinets because they supported all three resolutions. At the time, their performance was so impressive that other 3D games simply couldn’t compare. Because of that, it was extremely difficult to accurately reproduce these games on home consoles. In the early 1990s, the Model 1 arcade hardware cost close to $7,000, and even Sega’s own systems—the Mega Drive, 32X, and later the Sega Saturn—struggled to deliver arcade-perfect versions. Back then, I was disappointed by the gap in quality between the arcade and home versions. Looking back now, though, it’s amazing that Sega managed to port them as well as they did. It almost feels like a miracle. After eventually buying an arcade cabinet and a Model 1 board, I learned something I hadn’t realized before: Model 1 supported high-resolution monitors, unlike the standard displays used by most home systems. In those days, the average gamer didn’t even think about screen resolution, so seeing Virtua Fighter on a high-resolution arcade monitor created a fundamentally different experience from the home versions. When I first played Virtua Fighter on the Sega Saturn, I remember feeling that something was missing. When I heard Daytona USA was coming to the Sega Saturn, I sold all my other consoles and saved up for it. Finally got the Saturn and Daytona running at home—total mind-blow 🤯. Sure, it wasn’t quite arcade-perfect, but just being able to play it at home was enough. By the time Dreamcast came around, the port was almost flawless. Fun fact: Saturn was almost done as a 2D machine, but after seeing PlayStation’s 3D power, Sega tweaked it late—3D performance ended up a bit lacking. Irony is, the same Sega that pioneered 3D with Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter thought consoles weren’t ready yet.

In arcades, they were producing 3D games on a completely different level from their competitors, and they were constantly experimenting with new ideas on the home console side as well. If you look at the Mega Drive version of Virtua Racing, SEGA managed to bring over an arcade-quality experience by adding a special processor directly into the cartridge. Seeing that success, they likely realized that a dock-on device with its own dedicated hardware could allow the Mega Drive to handle 3D games—especially SEGA’s arcade-style 3D titles. That idea eventually became the 32X. At the time, the Mega Drive (Genesis) was incredibly popular in North America, so the concept definitely had potential. The problem was its timing. The 32X launched around the same period as SEGA’s next-generation console, the Sega Saturn, which created confusion in the market. If it had been released even a year earlier, giving players earlier access to games like Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, it might have achieved much stronger sales.
