AppleScript for terminal control is smart. For agentic workflows, you get: 1) cross-app automation (Finder + Ghostty), 2) native macOS permission model, 3) existing developer tooling. The kill-switch in config is crucial for enterprise adoption.

lowkey wild how "agentic tools like Claude and Codex" became the selling point for AppleScript integration. Pretty sure terminal power users were automating workflows before AI agents were even a thing. The feature sounds solid but the AI angle feels forced.

Fair, you literally led with broadcast commands and layouts I tunneled on the agentic bit. My bad. The AppleScript integration actually looks really clean though. Shipping it as a preview is smart too, gives you room to reshape the object model before people start building on top of it. Out of curiosity is the scripting dictionary closer to iTerm2's approach or are you going more minimal for now?

AppleScript is slow af and arcane and doesn't have a lot of training data; Lua or Scheme/Elisp would have been better choices.

Oh thank goodness. There’s all these amazing tools out there like cmux and such but the idea of using them seems unwise from a supply chain perspective. Prefer using tmux/zellij to satisfy my needs rather than adding unvetted dependencies.

I had a need for something like this just yesterday. I have a list of prompts and want to spawn an agent session for each one, capture the result, save it to a file, and then analyze the outputs separately. The key requirement was running up to 10 sessions in parallel

Yeah probably never. I still do a ton of work in a Linux VM day to day but don't think I can justify full switch due to how ingrained Apple is in my family (direct and extended).

This video is the one Kim Runner shared with me in July 2024 about how to tell whether you or others are NPCs. I can vividly imagine the stickiness and feel of holding an apple in my hand, the sensation of it denting when I squeeze it hard, its smell, and even its texture. Honestly, I was greatly shocked to learn that some people cannot do this. Below is the transcript of the audio.⬇️ Have you guys seen this experiment where you can not only test if the people around you are NPCs, but if you yourself are? Check this out. And if you don't know what an NPC is, basically, in the video game world, it's someone that's not being controlled by a person, just a random computer-generated thing. And in the real world, same thing, maybe just someone that's not being controlled by a soul. So I heard this experiment on a podcast, and I thought it was kind of crazy until I tried it out myself. And it has to do with apples. And you can probably use any object, but for our purposes, we're going to stick with apples. So there are going to be multiple layers to what I'm going to ask you to imagine. And depending on how far you can imagine it might just depend on if you're an NPC or not. So with this blank screen, I want you to picture a red apple here. Can you picture a red apple? If you can, great. So far, you're not an NPC. Next, I'd like you to think of that red apple, and in your mind—you can close your eyes if you need to—think of that apple as green. Can you change it to a green apple? Can you see a green apple without looking at it? Now stick with me. We're getting to the good parts here. If you can picture a red apple and then a green apple, great, but here's where a lot of people get stuck. And I'm taking away the image here. I want you to picture that green apple in your mind, and can you go in, and can you pick up that apple? Can you manipulate it? Can you move it around? Can you in your mind be holding it, and then all of a sudden it turns from green to purple? Do you have the ability to do that? Because for me, I could, no problem. But the shocking part was, as I was listening to this on the podcast, one person, they were stuck. They couldn't do anything but change colors. They couldn't grab it, they couldn't manipulate it. It was stuck there. One person couldn't even change colors of the apple. But I didn't believe this until I tried it on my wife. And my wife, she could change the color—she could go green and red—but she didn't have the ability to manipulate that apple. She couldn't grab that apple, she couldn't throw that apple. I'm juggling this apple, I'm doing all sorts of things with it, but hers is just a stuck image. And I thought that was nuts. I thought just because I had the ability to manipulate things in my mind and control things, that everybody did, but clearly that's not the case. And this leads me down the path of maybe this is why some people can't grasp the topics or the understanding of not living where we've been told we live our entire lives, because they can't visualize it, they can't think outside the green and red apple. Now, I'm not actually saying my wife is an NPC, but I do think our brains operate differently. I do think some are more right, some are more left, some are right down the middle, and some just don't really choose to think. But try it out, guys, because I found it fascinating, and I would love to hear how you did during this little experiment. It means you can fork to create virtual machines off of an existing one in less than 100ms, with all the processes cloned and running. smolvm is the first to have this feature + cross platform compatibility (macOS and linux natively). Here's a demo of a counter continuing on a forked clone while I only started it on the original!

Sam Altman on his method for clear thinking: "I'm a huge notetaker. I go through one of these notebooks every two or three weeks." Sam has a very specific system for thinking clearly through writing. As he puts it: "You definitely want a spiral notebook because one thing that's important is you can rip pages out frequently. Similar to Firebug with Firefox, I'm hoping this helps usher in a new era of develop-ability for terminal applications by making it much much easier to understand what is going on. When the inspector is not in use, there is no perceivable performance impact (benchmarks show the same). When the inspector is in use, the terminal it is inspecting slows down to about half speed due to the overhead. But this only impacts the terminal being inspected. This is a really early version of the inspector. The data organization is kind of messy, its mostly read-only information right now, and there is a lot more information I want to surface. The next step is making a lot of this data read-write so you can actually modify the terminal live (similar to modifying HTML/CSS live in a web inspector) to trial-and-error some changes. We are going to do some integrating of evolutionary biology with some of the value we got from the graduate level education we were put through during COVID. Here's a short video (4m) that goes into more detail on how "vim mode" works in Ghostty and the multitude of features that are composed together to make it all work. This showcases how powerful Ghostty's keybinding system is getting! And don't worry, I plan on shipping a built-in "vim mode" table (unbound by default) so you can bind an opinionated "vim mode" with a single line in your config. But, if you want to modify it in any way, that's completely possible because this all works via standard config.

Ghostty on both macOS and Linux now support marking a terminal as read-only. In this mode, you can still search, scroll, and select text, but no input is sent to the running program. If you have something scary you really don't want to mess up, this is perfect! You can toggle this with the command palette, a keybinding (bind "toggle_readonly"), the context menu, or the main menu.

The lack of "feature design" is why so many products over time feel hollow or messy. This isn't visual design. This isn't architectural design. I thought that a short video lecture of what feature design is and a real case study of applying it in Ghostty would be helpful. Feature design is the planning step behind how you're going to solve one or more user problems with a product feature: what that feature looks like, how it feels, and not just how its going to tactically solve these specific problems, but how that solution is going to interface with the edges of other features that currently exist or are planned to exist in the future.
