Ghostty 1.3 is going to have a preview of AppleScript support. All windows, tabs, splits, terminals are exposed via AppleScript. For macOS users, this satisfies some of the most common requests: broadcast commands, automatic layouts, jump to working directory, etc. PR here: I also think this is an incredibly... show more

@DanielleFong Server mode (like tmux) would be 🔥

everyone's talking about ai agents while mitchell is out here giving us the ability to script our terminal layouts with a language from 1993. nature is healing

AppleScript for terminal control is smart. For agentic workflows, you get: 1) cross-app automation (Finder + Ghostty), 2) native macOS permission model, 3) existing developer tooling. The kill-switch in config is crucial for enterprise adoption.

lowkey wild how "agentic tools like Claude and Codex" became the selling point for AppleScript integration. Pretty sure terminal power users were automating workflows before AI agents were even a thing. The feature sounds solid but the AI angle feels forced.

I gave plenty of examples and talked about agentic stuff last. Are you just rage baiting for no reason?

Fair, you literally led with broadcast commands and layouts I tunneled on the agentic bit. My bad. The AppleScript integration actually looks really clean though. Shipping it as a preview is smart too, gives you room to reshape the object model before people start building on top of it. Out of curiosity is the scripting dictionary closer to iTerm2's approach or are you going more minimal for now?

the broadcast commands bit alone is massive. entire teams running the same deploy command across 10 terminals simultaneously.

just expose an api and the people can submit prs for linux/windows

@link_arzu esto da a un buen de cosas de automatización a ti q t gusta hahaha

Your keyboard sounds amazing. What is it?

this is great thanks for your work: Im thinking how to add it on my repo: as i pretty much use ghostty on a day to day basis after i ditch warp building this repo :)

@grok what could be the use cases here ?

Nice, this is very cool!

Glad to see AppleScript being used, it's very powerful. And also happy you're not using the JS one. Thinking of ideas now.

great work

I just only need search feature in ghostty.

Nice

👀

What a G 🙏

Thank you!! This will be awesome for accessibility. Apple Events are noticeably faster than shortcuts

AppleScript is slow af and arcane and doesn't have a lot of training data; Lua or Scheme/Elisp would have been better choices.

waiting for the next stable release 😀

Oh thank goodness. There’s all these amazing tools out there like cmux and such but the idea of using them seems unwise from a supply chain perspective. Prefer using tmux/zellij to satisfy my needs rather than adding unvetted dependencies.

I had a need for something like this just yesterday. I have a list of prompts and want to spawn an agent session for each one, capture the result, save it to a file, and then analyze the outputs separately. The key requirement was running up to 10 sessions in parallel

Oh shit! This is nice. And nice that it relies on OS permission models. I'll have to take a look!

When are you fulling switching to Linux Mitchell. You will continue to be a macOS gigalord for life?

Yeah probably never. I still do a ton of work in a Linux VM day to day but don't think I can justify full switch due to how ingrained Apple is in my family (direct and extended).

I 100% feel ya!

oh hell yes.

This inspired me to build Hauntr 👻 A macOS menu bar app and CLI to launch multi-pane Ghostty terminal layouts via AppleScript ✨

When windows port?

Awesome! But i am looking forward to this( more than anything in 1.3 😅

Will the AppleScript integration handle the permission prompts gracefully? I'm thinking about automated workflows where macOS security dialogs could break the whole chain if they pop up unexpectedly.
👍

Can we get clipboard image paste por favor
so it may support too Javascript too ? apple added it for applescript replacement

That is super cool. I already have several ideas: exposing this in the embedded MCP server of Skwad to build cool developer experiences!

Exposing windows, tabs, splits and terminals via AppleScript is a really thoughtful approach. I can already think of several automation workflows where this would replace fragile osascript hacks.
