So we're losing almost double that every year from this disease. You'd think that the trillion dollars we put into that war and the daily preoccupation on the news, the nightly news coverage for 20 years the presidential elections that were fixated on it, and it's half the number of people that are effected every single year. Our communities are being torn apart. We need to give this the same priority. I'm very reluctant to dictate a government solution. What we found from touring, this is a small fraction of the places we actually visited. I wanted to see every place that's doing this right, and what we found is there's a tremendous diversity of approaches that are working very very well. One thing almost all of them have in common is that they don't have government support. And so I'm very reluctant to get the government involved in a way that is going to micromanage places like this. I want to make the government support them and that may be through land purchases and through those kinds of contracts but I don't want the government to be coming in and micromanaging. I think this has to be run by NGOs and we have to use a lot of different approaches. You know Franklin Roosevelt when he was launching the New Deal said 'We're going to try these programs and we're going try something one thing at a time and if it doesn't work we're going to abandon it and were going to try something else, but were always going to be trying something.' And all I can guarantee, I can't tell you right now that there's one solution or even a multiplicity of solutions but what I can tell you is that in my administration we're going to solve the problem because I'm going to focus on it. And if there are things that are working we're going to create ecosystems in which those kinds of solutions can proliferate.

Sam Altman on his method for clear thinking: "I'm a huge notetaker. I go through one of these notebooks every two or three weeks." Sam has a very specific system for thinking clearly through writing. As he puts it: "You definitely want a spiral notebook because one thing that's important is you can rip pages out frequently. I take a bunch of notes and then I clearly rip them out so I can look at multiple pages at the same time, and I can crumple them up and throw them on the floor when I'm done." On why writing matters, even with AGI: "Writing is a tool for thinking, most importantly, and I don't think that's going anywhere. It's really important that people still learn to write for this reason. In the same way that even if there's going to be less traditional coding jobs, coding is a great way to learn to think too; you should still learn to code." His perfect writing environment? "I used to think like, oh, I got to get in the perfect place, and I got to set a time. Now I will take any 11 minutes uninterrupted that I can get sitting in the back of a car, laying in bed, whatever it is." He continues: “If I had a perfect thing it would be Saturday morning with a cup of coffee and nothing scheduled. But most of it happens in short chunks in the back of a car." First of its kind? New feature in Ghostty: a web-inspector-style "terminal inspector" targeted at CLI, TUI developers. Built right into the terminal, you can see a live view of terminal state, keyboard events, escape sequences, and much much more. 👻💖 Video tour below. Similar to Firebug with Firefox, I'm hoping this helps usher in a new era of develop-ability for terminal applications by making it much much easier to understand what is going on. When the inspector is not in use, there is no perceivable performance impact (benchmarks show the same). When the inspector is in use, the terminal it is inspecting slows down to about half speed due to the overhead. But this only impacts the terminal being inspected. This is a really early version of the inspector. The data organization is kind of messy, its mostly read-only information right now, and there is a lot more information I want to surface. The next step is making a lot of this data read-write so you can actually modify the terminal live (similar to modifying HTML/CSS live in a web inspector) to trial-and-error some changes. Feature design is the planning step behind how you're going to solve one or more user problems with a product feature: what that feature looks like, how it feels, and not just how its going to tactically solve these specific problems, but how that solution is going to interface with the edges of other features that currently exist or are planned to exist in the future.

And if you look at the overall arc of human society and the economy over a hundred or a hundred fifty years, it’s basically people going from being primarily agrarian and most of human energy going towards just feeding ourselves… to that becoming a smaller and smaller percent. The things that take care of our basic physical needs are a smaller and smaller percent of human energy, which has led to two impacts. One is more people are doing kind of creative and cultural pursuits, and two is that people in general spend less time working and more time on entertainment and culture. I think that is almost certainly going to continue as this goes on. If everyone is going to have these superhuman tools to be able to create a ton of different stuff, I think you’re going to get this incredible diversity. Part of it is going to be solving hard problems like solving diseases or different things around science… but I would guess that a lot of it is going to end up being cultural and social pursuit and entertainment. The world is going to get a lot funnier and weirder and quirkier… like the memes on the internet have gotten over the last ten years. And that adds a certain kind of richness and depth… I think it actually helps you connect better with people.
