Gladiator 2 is a film that didn’t work for multiple reasons- one being scenes such as this. The unnecessary use of CGI totally took me out of the film. Gladiator released 24 years before its sequel but somehow looks much better. The filmmaking in Gladiator 2 really disappointed.

agreed, Gladiator is a film I watch at least once a year. The sequel felt like a microwaved tv diner. Instead of showing us something new, Ridley and co. preferred to revisit the same plot line through different characters and events.

I hope sequels like Gladiator II serve as cautionary tales for Heat 2. Like most people, I really wanted Gladiator II to work, but both the story & the filmmaking are just not good. But the fact Heat 2 is based off a quality crime novel (written by Mann himself) is reassuring.

The Martian is Ridley Scott’s best film post-Gladiator. Some may argue it’s Black Hawk Down, but The Martian is a definitively better film because of Matt Damon’s performance, who is a brilliant muse for Scott. I still think Scott is capable of directing films of this quality.

David Lynch’s use of sound throughout Eraserhead is one of a few core reasons this film is so memorable. But the decision to use a constant stream of white noise in place of a traditional score elevates the unsettling feeling & brings the audience closer to the story. This film was released in 1977 but it was light years ahead of its time. I really miss David Lynch.

The Odyssey’s scope, scale & magnitude reminds me of Gladiator. I’m too young to have seen Gladiator in theaters & I don’t know what the immediate reaction to it was at the time in 2000, but in terms of swords & sandals, I don’t know if I’ve seen a film compare to Gladiator other than The Odyssey. Both films are on another level separate from Troy. And both feature exceptional leading performances.
