Basically just echoing a lot of other comments on this thread. Obvs, this game was played at a pace that suited GH - but quite simply, the most gifted centre midfielder we ever produced. How he didn't get over 100 caps just shows how antiquated the powers that be were back then.

As overrated as most English players throughout history have been, I actually think some of those 80s boys; Hoddle, Waddle, Barnes, Bryan Robson were some of the most underrated players to ever play for England.

It should be to the eternal shame of Ron Greenwood and Bobby Robson that they failed to mould a team around this man. 😔 He wasn’t the ‘complete’ player, but in terms of vision, passing, and two-footedness he was genuinely elite, and comfortably the best England has ever had. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Wouldn't look out of place in a Brazil team.

Sorry. A massively overrated player. I saw him loads live. Hardly did anything. Looked good on the ball…but rarely made a match changing pass. Not fit to lace KDB’s boots.

All the “Golden generation” bollocks.. None of them could lace Hoddle’s boots. The best 3 midfielders we’ve produced are Hoddle, Gazza and Bryan Robson they were all truly world class footballers

Footballing genius. Best midfield player I have seen in my lifetime. Just look at the composure, passing range, always plays with his head up, scanning, pass selection spot on. Left foot, right foot, doesnt matter. Breathtaking player.

Many players have the intuition coached out of them these days. Managers & “systems”, rub out some talent to the extent there’s little room for self expression & spontaneity.

Genuine question. Why at so many games from 70s-90s in particular are there so many empty seats? Most games nowadays are pretty much full, international or league.
